Interview with the 2019 Muse Design Awards Winner - Andy Yu

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself, your company, job profile, etc.
I studied at Rhode Island School of Design, industrial design major, and apparel concentration. I love to draw inspiration from history and the world around me.

My work focuses on social issues such as gender, sexuality, feminism. It is important to me that my work holds a certain significance and value, not just beauty for beauty’s sake.
2Congratulations! As the winner of the 2019 Muse Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?
It means a lot to me to because it means that my ideas and work are validated. It is always nice to have others appreciate your ideas and thoughts as I have always been inspired by others as well.
3Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2019 Muse Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?
'My tree at least you shall be' is very special to me because it came out of my first travel experience in Europe. This project came from my direct studies of classical Italian art and sculptures. To be able to shed light on gender topics through storytelling and apparel is what I wanted to accomplish.
4What was the biggest challenge with this project?
The biggest challenge with this project is harmonizing traditional handwork with technology.

I had to learn digital embroidery and its complement program and test a series of samples on different fabrics based on weight, thread and color, determining the best combination of beads and embroidery while ensuring fit and movement.
5How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?

Winning the Award has validated my interest in the career of apparel. I believe it has also set me on a path of knowing who I am as a designer and working towards projects that differentiates myself from others.
6If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring Muse Award submitter, what advice would you give them?
Don’t be afraid to put yourself and your work out there. It is a rewarding experience for students because students get to express their fresh perspective that is often what the industry is looking for.
7What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?
My key to success is trusting in oneself and one's vision. One has to perfect one's practice and knowledge of the subject.

Always be open to different experiences, inspirations, and opportunities as they are what makes you unique. At the end of the day, creating work that you are proud of is already a success in itself.
