Interview with the 2020 MUSE Design Awards Winner - Yu-Ting Wang

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

I was graduated from KvB Institue of Technology, BA Art and majoring in Interior Design in Sydney, and was grown up in a building construction family background. Therefore, interior design and art has been an interest since childhood.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?

As I grew up in a building construction background, anything with space and building was all I've been seeing since I was young and it grew a great interest as the time passed by. Creating beautiful things from scratch has been very satisfying to see has been all I know, therefore I've decided to become an interior designer to achieve what I believe become real.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

I have been working as an interior designer and in building construction industry in Taiwan as I finished school. It has been a long learning progress before I started our own design company. I've been associated with many different kind of client and contractor as the learning progress, therefore it built up a solid base that helped me a lot in progress in forming our design company.

4What does “design” mean to you?

Interior design is constantly involved in our daily lives and it is a form of space, light, air, movement, figures, and senses. We believe that interior design should be a design that pleasures our senses also applied to the need of our clients. Therefore we provide with good functionality, good understanding of needs, and good design. We put forward our concern for the success of your entire projects operation.

5What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

My favorite kind of design is minimalism, it is a living style that you can put everything away and concentrate on what you focus in your life. As a living being, we take nothing from where we came from and leave with nothing as we leave, therefore minimalism can represent my way of living style the most.

6To you, what makes a “good” design?

A good design is to communicate well with the client and design something that is useful and functional for them. Therefore the communication in a good design has taken a great part. Combining with our aesthetics and the thoughts of the client, the design will be more characteristic and with a soul.

7Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

My design style is generally modern, but depending on our clients, we will also design the styles that is more related to their living or wishing style. The main characteristics is to great the place relate to what the client's character and personality.

8Tell us about your design process.

Our design process is to discuss with clients, understanding their personality and research with the basic ideas that we want to prove. We also discuss the design via 3D models, which can reduce the misunderstanding while explaining the design. It also helps the clients to recognize who the design will be as we design along. We also do 3D rendering during the design progress, it shows how different material collaborate with each other and how the effect will be as we finished the design.

9Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?

As I studied aboard and was from my cultural heritage,I learned the western thinking of art and design, where it has helped me with combining the modern thoughts and the cultural needs of design for Taiwanese clients.
