Interview with the 2021 MUSE Design Awards Winner - Ye Tian

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

Hi, I am Ye Tian. I graduated from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. I have over 10 years of experience in the interior design industry. I have led the company - Merzoom Interior Design Co. in serving many domestic well-known real estate developers, such as Longfor Properties, Shimao Property, Vanke Real Estate, Rong Hui Real Estate, Sunac Real Estate, Sinsere Real Estate, CIFI Real Estate, Junfa Real Estate, Tomson Group, etc., and provided them with hard and soft decoration design services. Aside from that, most my clients are from the real estate fields.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?

Infinite longing for a better home life.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

Merzoom Interior Design specializes in designing and decorating indoor spaces, such as model houses/marketing centers, clubs, hotels, and high-end private houses in the real estate industry. I am mainly responsible for the main theme and direction of the project design scheme, material selection and the overall quality control of materials, and the optimal presentation of completion effect.

4What does “design” mean to you?

For me, design means constantly updating and establishing the relationship among people, space, and objects. Finding the most comfortable balance point among them, and redefining their respective attributes through transformation, reconstruction or innovation in existing technology, guiding them to actively or passively show the parts that are close to people's character or spirit by using different design techniques to arouse people's reflection on the spirit and character of their hearts.

5What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

I like best the design related to nature or social culture. Because this is the design type that can directly arouse people's inmost spirit and temperament and get mapping in space.

6To you, what makes a “good” design?

Appropriate sensitivity and reflection from the perspective of others.

7Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

My design styles are relatively diverse, but mostly modern, and I am good at integrating the parts related to local culture and natural elements.

8Tell us about your design process.

Starting from on-site investigation of the project to the design of the initial scheme, I will determine the final scheme after integrating various opinions and suggestions, and then implement the design scheme, select materials, and finally, carry out optimization and adjustment after completion.

9Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?

If the project is apparently regionally characteristic, I will pay much attention to the embodiment of traditional culture in the design, which is inseparable from our growth environment and thought. It is mainly reflected in the extraction of symbolic cultural elements of the project location and their display in the design scheme.

10Congratulations! As the winner of the 2021 MUSE Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?

Thank the review team for their recognition of the winning project, which also means that we will engage in design with more international perspectives.

11Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2021 MUSE Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

In the construction of this award-winning project, the reconstruction mode used in the development will occur inward through the maintenance of the original building and the reconstruction of the original space. In order to protect the original style and features of the representative streets in Kunming, we try our best to preserve the symbols related to urban memory, urban culture and their underlying logic through contemporary design techniques, change the relationship between people and space, create a sense of community, make it become both competition and cooperation of development and preservation, which is also the reason why we attended the competition with this project.

12What was the biggest challenge with this project?

The biggest challenge lies in the integrating degree between the tension expression of spatial structure and elements of metaphor in local culture.

13How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?

To be recognized by many people within the industry and to improve the company's brand and reputation.

14What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?

Innovation, contradiction, and deep thought under social trend.

15What makes your country specifically, unique in the design industry?

The integration of traditional culture and exotic culture, as well as the society, history, and people's empathy ability.

16Where do you see the evolution of design industry going over the next 5-10 years?

It will undoubtedly be more open, inclusive, and diversified.

17If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring MUSE Design Awards submitter, what advice would you give them?

To put more efforts and keep trying, and fear no failures.

18What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the design industry?

More extensive, better quality online resources in the internet world.

19Who has inspired you in your life and why?

My family, friends, and teachers.

20What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

To explore, learn, and repeat.
