Interview with the 2021 MUSE Design Awards Winner - Steven Sun

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

Hi, my name is Steven Sun. I graduated from School of media and design, Shanghai Jiaotong University in 2008, and founded Sun Space Design Studio in 2013.

I am Vice president unit of soft decoration branch of China Building Decoration Association, a registered senior interior architect of China Building Decoration Association and a registered senior interior designer of International Construction Decoration Association.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?

Interior design is directly related to the quality of our residential life. It is particularly meaningful to create value for others through our own profession and efforts. We can improve others' lives and bring surprises to people. Irresponsible and unprofessional design will bring trouble and even disaster to people. Therefore, as an interior designer, it is of great responsibility and significance.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

Many people think that designers are only responsible for art and taste. In fact, this is completely wrong. Design cognition needs a comprehensive professional awakening. We design an all-round life. In addition to the aesthetic and charm, we can also best reflect professional in the design of wind, heating, water, electricity, light and structure.

4What does “design” mean to you?

Residential interior design is not only my style, but also my work, interest and social responsibility. Design is not a good-looking appearance understood by the public. In fact, it is the planning and implementation of space, function, humanity, technology, materials and so on. Only the implementation of landing design is the real design. In other words, the real design should be from the inside out, and the starting point is to improve human settlements.

5What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

Our company's main business is residential design, because it is very close to our life, and we can find a lot of inspiration and answers from life. It feels great if you can help others complete their living ideal and get the respect and recognition of others.

6To you, what makes a “good” design?

Good design must be in line with human nature. The aesthetics of design does not necessarily have standards, but there are standards for good and bad. The first is reasonable planning, convenient use, material selection and control of construction technology in the landing process. In addition to professionalism, we also need patience and persistence. In short, we should try our best to realize the design that meets the needs of customers, and have a certain foresight. Design pursues not the best but the better one. Therefore, the best landing at present is good design.

7Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

My design has no so-called formal style, but it must look harmonious, durable, and in line with aesthetic laws and certain design logic. My design emphasizes from the inside out, that is, to ensure that the concealment, structure, system and equipment that the owner can't see and understand should be perfect, rather than only considering the final artistic effect.

8Tell us about your design process.

My design process is divided into three stages: early stage, middle stage and late stage. In the early stage, I mainly investigate the site environment to understand the geographical environment and architectural structure of the project. At the same time, I will get to know the personality, and needs of the owner and family members. After a thorough understanding, in-depth communication, only then I will start designing the conceptual scheme.

The main work in the middle stage is to plan the plane and three-dimensional effects, conduct market research, select materials, and control and balance the cost. The design drawings shall be completed after a repeated communication and confirmation with the owner.

The main work in the late stage, which is to guide, supervise and accept every detail in the landing process of design and construction, while at the same time helping the owner to record and pay attention to some important concealment processes.

9Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?

There must be. We need to have cultural self-confidence and understand our own culture. Any culture should not blindly pursue form, but pay attention to the spirit. It is essential for designers to understand the essence of different cultures, and appropriately and reasonably apply it to its owners and environment.

10Congratulations! As the winner of the 2021 MUSE Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?

First of all, I would like to thank the 2021 MUSE Design Awards for the recognition and encouragement. I also like this beautiful trophy very much!

Winning the prize is not an end, but a new starting point. This is how we start new projects, empower new owners, and constantly achieve self breakthrough and precipitation in actual projects. Every project and every honor is a valuable experience that we all cherish.

11Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2021 MUSE Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

My work is called Change Numerous For Brief. The owner is engaged in investment business, he has seen a lot of luxurious things and has a little aesthetic fatigue. Some designers he had contacted before always design programmatically and imposed the most popular things on him. We try to listen to his inner demands and design his home on the premise of favorable living condition. That is, we give him what he wants, and we just don't do what he doesn't want. In addition, we have made precise and rigorous design and implementation of landscape, civil engineering, water supply and drainage, power distribution, HVAC and other professional things. Make design planning on the basis of professionalism.

12What was the biggest challenge with this project?

Doing anything mainly depends on accumulation. Every project is challenging, and we need to put forward higher requirements for ourselves. At the time of this project, our owner didn't need artworks, even carpets. After meeting the customer's safety, health, human nature and other needs, we had to integrate into the customer's old things. It was difficult to have beauty without stacking and decoration. This requires a precise balance in many aspects.

13How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?

The award is not only an affirmation and encouragement to us, but also a good platform for communication and promotion.

14What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?

1. Win the benign competition with other design institutions.

2. Passion and thinking when making the scheme, aftertaste and sense of achievement after the scheme is made and recognized and praised by the owner.

3. After many efforts and persistence, we see the owner's heartfelt happiness when the final design is delivered.

15What makes your country specifically, unique in the design industry?

China will be a better place for the design industry. China has a huge market and great potential. With the rapid improvement of life quality and the change of life style, design needs to constantly update thinking. China also has unique culture and profound history, which need us to further understand and develop our own design language.

16Where do you see the evolution of design industry going over the next 5-10 years?

I'd like to talk about my views on the design industry in the field of private houses:

1. I think what the design industry lacks most at present is not culture and the so-called style, but the ingenuity of construction technology and the mentality pattern of balancing advantages and disadvantages. So that most people don't know the value of design except beauty.

2. Design needs thorough professionalization and specialization. Designers need to have a solid theoretical foundation, including architecture, structure, HVAC, electromechanical, water supply and drainage, art, etc. Design is from the inside out, not just appearance.

3. The future design must first do a good job in professional landing. Not everyone needs to be a master, but every link of landing can be done well, even if there is no artistic masterpiece, it can give people a comfortable living. Safety is always greater than human nature, and function is greater than aesthetic form.

17If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring MUSE Design Awards submitter, what advice would you give them?

Design needs accumulation and persistence. First design with love and then persistence. Don't be eager for success in a short time, lay a good theoretical foundation, and then accumulate more practical experience. Learn empathy and social responsibility. Really good design is people-oriented, not stick to any form, only do the right and appropriate, not necessarily expensive and fashionable. Instead of creating popularity, we create a better life.

18What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the design industry?

Care more about the inconveniences of people around you and experience life more. Learn some other majors related to design, such as speech, building structure, project management, etc.

Read more excellent design works, don't only read the words, but interpret the design logic behind them.

19Tell us something you have never told anyone else.

I am a man who speaks without reserve.

20Who has inspired you in your life and why?

There are many people , such as customers, family members, colleagues, including all kinds of things in life. Design is a habit of thinking. It is good at discovering and thinking. Once it is used, it can be done.

21What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

Love with persistence, keep the original heart and be considerate.

22Which THREE (3) friends/peers would you nominate to participate in the next MUSE Design Awards?

Wang Muquan, Chen Xin, Chen Tao

23Do you have anything else you would like to add to the interview?

No more, thanks to MUSE.
