Interview with the 2021 MUSE Photography Awards Winner - Nicoletta Cerasomma

1Can you introduce yourself and talk about how you got into photography?

Storytelling is a way of exploring the world I wish I lived in, where at the same time is surreal and sublime, and made up of paradoxes, absurdities and nonsense. I work with concept that are emotional and timeless to create art with resonance and personal connection.

Utilizing the diptych format, I incorporate cultural iconography in a painterly way with satirical narratives inspired by the collective unconscious. My images are highly planned and I seek the technical perfection through the use of studio lights. After that, I altered the images to create new narratives as composites, where the past and present coexist. I often spend anywhere from five to fifty hours in Photoshop.

My childhood was filled with imaginary characters drawn from the story of those women who made my community unique. Although some of these characters are based on real people who really did exist, the mystery and the unknown which surround them let public link them to an imaginary world, made up of ancestral fears and archetypes.

In adulthood photography has enabled me to reconnect to my community and now I can find beauty in darkness and decay, as well as the legacy of those women in our identity. My goal is to bring a light to what usually keep hidden and unlock the darkness in us all.

2Where did you study photography?

I did a course at Pisa University and Fondazione Marangoni specialized in fashion photography.

3Do you remember your first shot? What was it?

Yes, I do! My first loving shot was in Paris: the tour Eiffel.

4What equipment do you use?

Nikon D850 and D700 with 24/70Vr and 70/200VrFl

5What do you hope to achieve?

I hope to find representation of gallerists.

6What inspires your unique storytelling?

My culture and my dreams/nightmares.

7What THREE (3) words describe your photography style?

Dark, Surreal and Mystery

8Congratulations! As the winner of the MUSE Photography Awards, what does it mean for you and your team to receive this distinction?

It means that I am able to communicate in the best way about who I am through my vision, my dreams, and nightmares.

9Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2021 MUSE Photography Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

The main characters and subjects of this project are women from Lucca, feminine figure that shaped their lives based on their will. Doing so, they deprived themselves of their own identity in order to become symbolic icons, the reflection of the society they lived in. What I want to represent is their stories and plumb the depth of their legacy that still affects our cultural heritage. For this reason I recall the cultural contest they lived in and, at the same time, and emphasize their contribution to the creation of Lucca’ social and cultural context and local community identity. Although some of these characters are based on real people, the mystery and the unknown which surround them let public link them to an imaginary world, made up of ancestral fears and archetypes.

10How has winning an award developed your career?

It has affect my work greatly! I managed to show my work worldwide, and at a lot of galleries.

11Name 1-3 photographers who have inspired you.

Cindy Sherman, Guy Bourdin, Brooke Shaden.

12What was the best piece of advice you were given starting out, by a mentor or your role model?

Show the world your soul.

13 What advice would you give someone who would like to become a photographer today?t makes your country specifically, unique in the design industry?

Show the world your soul.

14What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

Try to be different using my imagination and my italian culture. I suggest you put into your art your personal experience.

15 How do you stay in that space of being receptive to new information and knowledge?

I always look at all the professional winners in every important contest and on social media.

16Which THREE (3) peers, within the photography industry, would you nominate to be a judge in the next MUSE Photography Awards? (You may include yourself within, and please include the email addresses)

Nicoletta Cerasomma (scrivi@nicolettacerasomma.it), Brooke Shaden (hello@brookeshaden.com), Cindy Sherman.
