Interview with the 2019 Vega Digital Awards Winner - Diogo Gama Rocha

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your background.

I consider myself a curious person and a tireless observer and I realized that designing would be my future. The creativity, art and industry were always a part of my life. I inherited my passion for art from my maternal grandparents, who were both painters; and my fascination by industry and management came from my father. So, I ended up learning about these different areas every day and the truth is that being a designer happened to be a natural course for me. I studied Design and Marketing and, in 1998, I’ve founded Omdesign. Fortunately, and since then, the company never stopped growing.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a digital designer/artist?

Entering into the design area and the digital world was a natural consequence. To be well succeeding, we need to continue reinventing our agency and the solutions presented. Consequently, the digital segment raised, and we saw that our clients would benefit with digital solutions, therefore day after day, we became more and more digital, always preserving the focus in design as a strategic solution.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

The company has begun its activity for more than 22 years ago. We work on our clients’ brands daily, from Leça da Palmeira (Matosinhos) to the world, having admiration as the goal and the respect of their clients – the final consumer.

The strong relationships that Omdesign’s team has built over these decades are the result of the dedication and the unique way the agency embraces each project, always offering innovative and highly effective solutions.

4Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

We like to think that our design style is timelessness, where we will look at it a few years from now and still love it. That is our goal.

5Where do you draw inspiration from?

We seek for inspiration in everything that we see and surrounds us. Even the simplest things can inspire us to develop a great luxury project. We need to pay attention to all the details, to nature, to everyone and everything we face every day.

6What current trends in digital design (or really anything digital related) are you most excited about?

Simplicity. Clean design is certainly a trend.

7Congratulations! As the winner of the 2019 Vega Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?

We are so proud to be recognized once again by the Vega Awards. It is a pleasure for our team to keep taking the best of Portuguese design across borders and to be recognized for the very differentiating solutions we create every day.

8Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2019 Vega Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

The Honore Port film was developed to mark more than 400 years of history of Quinta do Crasto, an emblematic Portuguese estate from Douro with wines recognized worldwide. We created and developed a conceptual film that, in a little bit more than 5 minutes, shows all the history and essence of this unique Douro estate. This film is a tribute to Quinta do Crasto’s founder, Constantino de Almeida, who always defended the motto “Honore et Labore” (Honour and Work) and it also aims to pay homage to all those that, since 1615, were invested in farming the vineyards and creating unique and authentic wines, as Honore Port.

We’ve chosen this project because we think that the film tells this unique story in a particular way and because it has interesting and exceptional characteristics and techniques that distinguish it amongst others.

9How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?

Fortunately, we have been awarded for our work in the last few years, which is a consequence of the hard work and excellence we put in everything we make. All the prizes achieved are a strong motivation for us to keep going in the same route we’ve defined since the beginning in 1998.

10What are your top three (3) favorite things about the digital industry?

It is difficult to choose only three, because I really think that this industry is fascinating, but I can refer, for instance:

- Every day is a new challenge, considering that design and advertising areas are in constant evolution;

- The daily need to analyze each brand and always present them with the best solution is also a plus that makes each day unique;

- We do not have routines, which is an advantage because it develops our ability to improvise and also challenge ourselves every day.

11What makes your country specifically, unique in the digital industry?

The Portuguese people are unique in the art of doing-well in several fields of activity and creative and digital industry is not an exception.

12Where do you see the evolution of digital industry going over the next 5-10 years?

In the next 5-10 years, I believe that we will be able to see even more innovative options in this sector. As any other creative industry, the digital industry is also in permanent progress, in terms of new communication platforms, tools, coding and new ways of catching the consumers’ attention. For that reason, the digital/creative solutions presented will be more surprising, even when they are the most simple or sophisticated ones.

13If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring Vega Award submitter, what advice would you give them?

The only advice I can give is to work hard. As far as I know, this is the only key to succeed.

14What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the digital industry?

You should never stop learning. It is crucial to always create distinctive and innovative solutions, never forgetting that simplicity is a plus, because often (if not always) less is more.

15Who has inspired you in your life and why?

My biggest inspiration were my grandparents, undoubtedly, both of them being painters. They are, even now, one of my main sources of inspiration, like my father, to whom I owe the fascination for the world of management.

16What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

I really believe that if there exists a key to success, the key is to work hard. Only by working a lot every day, always focusing on the excellence and accuracy will we be able to succeed. Personally, I think it is also extremely important to be ambitious, bold and to do better and differently day after day. If we have a truly positive attitude, the success will come naturally.
