Catherine Tang

Catherine (Ziyue) Tang, originally from China and now based in New York, is a fashion designer whose work is deeply focused on creating functional garments. She believes that the distinction between fashion design and product design is becoming increasingly blurred, as garments can be considered products in their own right.

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your background.
I am Catherine (Ziyue) Tang, originally from China and now a designer based in New York. My work as a fashion designer is deeply rooted in creating functional garments. I believe that the lines between fashion design and product design are becoming increasingly blurred, as garments themselves can be viewed as products.
2What made you become/why did you choose to become a product designer?

My journey into product design stemmed from my passion for fashion design, particularly creating functional garments. I've always believed that there isn't a clear line between fashion design and product design because garments themselves are products. This realization inspired me to explore the functional aspects of clothing, making each piece not only practical but also fun and interesting.

Fashion design, at its core, is about understanding the user's needs and creating solutions that enhance their experience. This aligns closely with the principles of product design. By focusing on functionality, I aim to design garments that address real-world problems while still being visually appealing.

The challenge and excitement of blending practicality with creativity have always driven me. I love experimenting with materials, forms, and features to develop garments that are both innovative and user-friendly. This holistic approach allows me to push the boundaries of traditional fashion design and explore new possibilities in the realm of product design.

In essence, my choice to become a product designer was a natural progression from my work in fashion design. It allows me to apply my skills and passion in a broader context, ensuring that each design is both a beautiful and functional product that enhances the everyday lives of its users.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

I am a fashion designer based in New York. Currently, my focus is on designing sportswear and streetwear, combining functionality with contemporary aesthetics. My work involves creating garments that are not only stylish but also practical for everyday wear and active lifestyles.

As a designer, I pay special attention to the materials and construction techniques to ensure that each piece meets the highest standards of comfort and durability. My approach blends the latest fashion trends with the practical needs of the wearer, resulting in designs that are both fashionable and functional.

In my role, I handle everything from initial concept development to the final production of the garments. This includes researching market trends, sketching designs, selecting fabrics, and overseeing the manufacturing process. I collaborate closely with other designers, manufacturers, and marketers to bring my visions to life.

My experience in the industry has also allowed me to develop a keen understanding of the business side of fashion. I work on creating collections that not only appeal to consumers but also align with market demands and business goals.

Through my work, I aim to push the boundaries of traditional sportswear and streetwear, offering innovative and exciting products that resonate with modern consumers.

4What does “design” mean to you?

To me, design represents a continuous journey of innovation and discovery. It's about developing new concepts that bring more fun, new aesthetics, and practical improvements to our lives. Design is not just about creating something visually appealing; it's about enhancing the human experience through thoughtful and functional creations.

Design is also a powerful means of expressing my perspective and understanding of the world. It allows me to communicate my unique viewpoints and interpretations of various phenomena. Through design, I can share my vision and contribute to a broader dialogue on how we can shape and improve our surroundings.

5What’s your favorite kind of design and why? What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

My favorite kind of design is one that has a striking visual impact and clearly reflects the strong characteristics of the designer behind it. I am drawn to designs that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also convey the unique vision and personality of the creator. When a design has a distinct visual effect, it can captivate and inspire, leaving a lasting impression on its audience.

For me, the best designs are those that seamlessly blend form and function while showcasing the designer's individual style and perspective. This kind of design speaks to the creativity and thoughtfulness invested in the creation process, making it not only beautiful to look at but also meaningful and engaging.

I appreciate designs that push boundaries, challenge conventions, and introduce fresh, innovative ideas. These designs not only enhance our environment but also provoke thought and evoke emotions, making the world a more interesting and dynamic place.

6To you, what makes a “good” design?

To me, a good design is one that effectively balances aesthetics, functionality, and purpose. It should captivate visually, offering a pleasing and engaging experience to its audience. However, beauty alone isn't enough; the design must also serve its intended function well. This means it should be intuitive, user-friendly, and meet the practical needs of its users.

Additionally, a good design clearly communicates the designer's intent and perspective. It should have a distinctive character that reflects the unique vision and style of its creator, making it memorable and impactful.

Moreover, good design often pushes boundaries and explores new ideas, challenging conventional norms and introducing innovation. It should evoke emotions, provoke thought, and inspire its audience, contributing to a richer, more dynamic environment.

In essence, a good design is a harmonious blend of form, function, and meaning. It is not only visually appealing but also practical, thoughtful, and expressive, making a positive impact on both the user and the broader context in which it exists.

7Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

My design style can be best described as futuristic and clean, with a strong emphasis on multi-way wear and functionality. I strive to create garments that not only look modern and innovative but also offer versatility and practicality.

Futuristic: I am inspired by forward-thinking concepts and technologies, which I incorporate into my designs to create pieces that feel ahead of their time. This involves exploring new materials, silhouettes, and techniques that push the boundaries of traditional fashion design.

Clean: A minimalist approach is central to my aesthetic, favoring sleek lines and uncluttered designs. This ensures that each piece is not only visually appealing but also timeless and sophisticated.

Multi-way to Wear: Versatility is a key characteristic of my designs. I love creating garments that can be worn in multiple ways, allowing the wearer to adapt their look to different occasions and personal styles. This not only adds value to each piece but also promotes sustainability through more mindful consumption.

Functional: Above all, functionality is at the heart of my design philosophy. I believe that fashion should not only be beautiful but also serve a practical purpose. My designs are crafted to be comfortable, durable, and suited to the dynamic lifestyles of modern consumers.

By combining these elements, I aim to create innovative and practical designs that resonate with contemporary audiences and enhance their everyday lives.

8Tell us about your design process.

My design process begins with drawing inspiration from my life and daily requirements. I often find that the best ideas come from observing and understanding the needs and challenges that I encounter in everyday situations. Once I identify a specific requirement or phenomenon, I delve into research to gain a deeper understanding of it.

I explore various aspects of the requirement or phenomenon, gathering information and insights that can help me address the problem effectively. This research phase is crucial as it allows me to understand the context, user needs, and potential solutions that have been tried before.

After thorough research, I move on to brainstorming and sketching ideas. This is where I experiment with different concepts and think creatively about how to solve the problem or express the idea through my design. I consider various materials, forms, and functionalities that can enhance the user experience.

Next, I create prototypes or initial models to test the feasibility of my ideas. This hands-on phase helps me refine the design, make necessary adjustments, and ensure that it meets both aesthetic and functional criteria. I iterate on these prototypes based on feedback and testing until I achieve a final design that aligns with my vision.

Throughout the process, I remain focused on the balance between form and function, ensuring that the final product is not only visually appealing but also practical and user-friendly.

In essence, my design process is a blend of inspiration, research, creativity, and iterative development, all aimed at creating innovative and functional designs that improve everyday life.

9Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?

Yes, my country and its cultural heritage have a profound impact on my design process. My mother is from one of the national minorities in China, known as the Dong people. This rich cultural background has been a constant source of inspiration for my work.

The Dong culture is renowned for its exquisite textiles, intricate embroidery, and unique craftsmanship. Growing up, I was surrounded by these beautiful art forms, and they have greatly influenced my approach to design. I often draw upon traditional Dong motifs and techniques, incorporating them into my contemporary designs to create pieces that are both culturally significant and modern.

For a designer, cultural heritage is incredibly important. It provides a deep well of inspiration and a unique perspective that can set one's work apart. By integrating elements of my cultural heritage into my designs, I am able to create garments that tell a story and resonate with a wider audience.
