1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your background.

We are XR5, a team composed of specialized professionals united by our passion for merging technology with cultural heritage.

Our group includes Jiayi Chen, an Automotive UI/UX Designer who brings precision and innovation from the automotive industry. Longzhe Zhang, a seasoned UI/UX Designer with a sharp eye for user engagement. Zilan Zhou and Yefan Liu, both talented Industrial Designers who infuse functionality with aesthetic in every design and Huancheng Huang, who spearheads our business development efforts, ensuring our projects achieve their market potential.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a product designer?
We chose to pursue careers in product design driven by our collective passion for blending creativity with functionality. Each of us was drawn to the field for the profound impact well-designed products can have on daily life, and we were united by a shared vision of using our skills to solve real-world problems through innovative design.
3What does “design” mean to you?

For our team, design means creating experiences that tell stories. With "The Mukden Palace Experience," design meant reimagining how visitors engage with cultural heritage. It was about crafting an interface that not only preserved the authenticity of historic artifacts but also made them accessible and intriguing for a modern audience.

We leveraged the latest technology to create interactions that feel natural and immersive, allowing users to connect with history in a personal and meaningful way.

4What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

Our favorite kind of design is immersive and interactive design. This preference stems from our deep interest in creating experiences that not only capture the imagination but also actively engage users in a meaningful dialogue with the content.

Immersive design transcends traditional boundaries, allowing users to step inside a story or a concept, experiencing it from within rather than as mere observers.

5To you, what makes a “good” design?
To us, a "good" design is one that achieves a harmonious balance between functionality and aesthetics while deeply engaging the user. It must be intuitive, making the experience effortless and seamless for the user. A good design solves real problems effectively and often innovatively, improving user experience in a way that feels both natural and impactful.
6Describe your design style and its main characteristics.
Our design style is characterized by the innovative integration of technology and tradition. We strive to bridge the gap between historical authenticity and modern interactivity, ensuring that our designs not only preserve cultural heritage but also make it accessible and engaging through the latest technological advancements.
7Tell us about your design process.

Our design process begins with a deep dive into understanding the problem we're addressing. For "The Mukden Palace Experience," this involved extensive research at the Shenyang Palace Museum, including field observations and internet ethnography.

We immerse ourselves in the environment to grasp fully the historical context, user needs, and the technological possibilities that can be employed.

8Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?

Absolutely, Chinese rich cultural heritage profoundly impacts our design process. It shapes our perspectives and informs our approach to creating solutions that are not only functional but also culturally resonant and respectful. The historical and cultural depth of our surroundings provides a continuous source of inspiration.

While we draw heavily from our national culture, we also ensure that our designs have a universal appeal that can engage and inspire a global audience. This balance helps in promoting cultural exchange and understanding through our work.

9Congratulations! As the winner of the 2024 NY Product Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?
Receiving the Silver Winner distinction at the 2024 NY Product Design Awards is an immense honor for us at XR5. This recognition is not just a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team but also a validation of our innovative approach to blending technology with cultural heritage.
10Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2024 NY Product Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

The Mukden Palace Experience is a groundbreaking project that represents our team's innovative approach to enhancing visitor engagement at cultural heritage sites. This mixed reality interface seamlessly integrates cutting-edge technology with the traditional exhibits of the Shenyang Palace Museum, creating an immersive and interactive visitor experience.

Why We Chose to Enter This Project:

Innovative Integration of Technology and Culture: One of the primary reasons we chose to enter this project was its innovative use of technology to bridge the gap between historical cultural artifacts and modern-day interactive experiences. Using devices like the Apple Vision Pro, we enabled intuitive interactions such as eye-tracking and gesture controls, which allowed visitors to engage with the museum's artifacts in a deeply personal and dynamic way.

Research-Driven Design: The project was deeply informed by extensive field research, including observations and interactions at the Shenyang Palace Museum itself. We utilized this research to craft experiences that are not only technologically advanced but also culturally and historically informed. This meticulous attention to detail and dedication to authenticity is what we believed set our project apart.

Enhancing Educational Value: Our goal was to transform how visitors understand and interact with cultural heritage. By creating a more engaging and interactive learning environment, we hoped to make cultural education more appealing and accessible to a broader audience, particularly to younger generations. This project provided an opportunity to showcase how design can play a crucial role in educational reform, especially in settings that are traditionally more static.

Demonstrating Design Excellence: We entered "The Mukden Palace Experience" into the NY Product Design Awards to showcase our commitment to excellence in design. We wanted to demonstrate how thoughtful design could significantly enhance user experience and interaction, particularly in the context of cultural heritage sites.

Setting a Benchmark in the Industry: Lastly, we saw the competition as a platform to set a benchmark for what can be achieved in the realm of product UX, especially in the cultural sector. Winning this award would not only acknowledge our efforts but also inspire other designers and institutions to explore innovative solutions in their practices.

11What was the biggest challenge with this project?
Balancing Authenticity and Innovation: The biggest challenge in developing "The Mukden Palace Experience" was striking the right balance between preserving the authenticity of cultural artifacts and integrating cutting-edge interactive technology. Our goal was to enhance the visitor experience without compromising the historical integrity and cultural significance of the exhibits.
12What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?

Innovation and Creativity: One of our favorite aspects of the design and technology industry is the boundless opportunity for innovation and creativity. Every project challenges us to think outside the box and develop new solutions that push the limits of what technology can achieve in enhancing human experiences.

Especially in projects like "The Mukden Palace Experience," we get to reimagine how technology can transform traditional spaces and narratives, making them more interactive and engaging. This creative freedom fuels our passion and drives our work.

Impact on Society: We deeply value the potential our industry has to make a significant impact on society. Through our work, particularly in integrating design with cultural heritage, we have the opportunity to educate, inspire, and connect people.

Our projects not only enhance the way people interact with technology but also deepen their understanding and appreciation of culture and history. This ability to contribute positively to societal knowledge and cultural preservation is incredibly rewarding.

Collaborative Environment: Our industry thrives on collaboration, bringing together experts from various fields such as design, technology, history, and education to create holistic and impactful experiences. This collaborative environment fosters a unique synergy that enhances our projects and leads to innovative solutions.

Working in teams like XR5, where each member brings a different expertise and perspective, enriches our professional experience and contributes to our personal growth. The shared learning and mutual inspiration among peers is something we cherish deeply.

13Where do you see the evolution of design industry going over the next 5-10 years?

Increased Integration of Emerging Technologies: We anticipate a deeper integration of emerging technologies such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), artificial intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT) within the design process.

These technologies will continue to transform how users interact with products and environments, offering more immersive, personalized, and responsive experiences. For instance, AR and VR can be expected to revolutionize areas from retail to real estate by allowing more interactive and exploratory user engagement.

14If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring NY Product Design Awards submitter, what advice would you give them?
Embrace a Lifelong Learning Mindset: The design industry is continuously evolving, with new technologies and methodologies emerging regularly. Stay curious and committed to learning throughout your career. Attend workshops, take courses, and keep up with industry publications to stay ahead of trends and technologies.
