Interview with the 2021 MUSE Design Awards - Aliaksandr Sharavarau

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

Amoth Studio was founded in 2020 by Sasha Sharavarau and Tania Sharavarava. Both of us have a design background. Sasha has studied illustration and graphic design, Tania - visual design and media and later – animation.

After graduation, each of us had come a long way, working as freelancers and cooperating with different companies specializing in design. After all, we decided to combine our energy, effort, and experience in a mutual project – Amoth Studio.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?

Sasha: I always wanted to create worlds. I started to develop interest in graphic design when I was young and I attended an art school later on. At the time, I didn’t think I’d become a designer. But as I was exploring different areas of the visual world, I found myself in the field of graphic design.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

We are a young family-run design studio focused on packaging and brand identity.

4What does “design” mean to you?

A functional beauty.

5What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

It’s hard to tell. There are many beautiful examples from different areas of design that inspire us. But to be honest, our favorites are always the designs, in which the idea is not immediately obvious. We like it when there is a key to the design, and once you find it, you feel like a winner.

6To you, what makes a “good” design?

A perfect match of aesthetic and functional compounds.

7Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

Our approach is usually toward crafty and thoughtful design with a touch of modern vintage. Of course, it also depends on the specificities of the project and the brand’s purposes.

8Tell us about your design process.

It’s quite a classic one. First, we formulate the task. Second, we conduct research on the main topic in search of inspiration. We then collect and define main symbols and significant elements. Finally, comes the stage of concept development and realization. Seems to be pretty straightforward.

9Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?

We both were born in Belarus, but we’ve been living in the Czech Republic for the past 10 years.

On the one hand, it’s possible to say that everything has an impact on us as personalities and as professionals. However, most of the time, we get inspired by design examples from all over the world. So, we are of the opinion that the context of our country does not have a significant impact on our design process.

10Congratulations! As the winner of the 2021 MUSE Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?

We are very happy and grateful for the opportunity to receive the award. It is particularly important for us as we are a young studio. The award, for us, is a reassurance that we are moving in the right direction. It is a sign of support and an encouragement to continue to grow and develop.

11Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2021 MUSE Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

We received two awards this year – platinum for Orloj absinth and silver for Zbojnicka fruit distillates. We find both projects strong and deserving attention, but they are completely different when it comes to their mood and character. This is why we decided to send both projects and see what they are worth.

12What was the biggest challenge with this project?

Working with a client is always a bit of a challenge. To combine your vision as a designer with the vision of the client, to find common touchpoints and build a balanced dialogue – this is a harmony that can be seen in the end result of the work, the final design.

13How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?

We received the award just recently and did not have the chance to fully feel its impact yet. But we hope to experience it in the future.

14What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?

Space for creativity, storytelling, and visual beauty.

15Where do you see the evolution of design industry going over the next 5-10 years?

Everything is moving so fast towards automatization that we are absolutely sure that a big part of our work will be eventually done by machines or be computer-generated. We hope that not everything.

16Who has inspired you in your life and why?

Our families and life teachers. We also inspire each other. And of course, many talented personalities from the cinema industry (like Andrei Tarkovsky or Lars von Trier) and the contemporary design industry (Stefan Sagmeister, Fabien Barral and others), as well as amazing typographers and artists have been an inspiration for us.

17What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

First and foremost, one should explore and understand their own personality. Once this is achieved, it is important to be consistent, understand your limits, and always move forward.
