Interview with the 2019 MUSE Design Awards Winner - Ilana Seleznev

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

A bit about my design education:

2009, Industrial design, DA, Avni Design Center, Tel-Aviv/Israel 2013, Marketing, MBA, The Open University, Ra'anana/Israel 2016, SIT, Course, IDC, Herzeliya/Israel 2016 - 2018 Master

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?

My profession is basically everything and anything that has three dimensions. My main reason is to change the world bit by bit with products that can help people even on a daily basis.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

My name is Ilana and my profession is an industrial designer, I am the owner and founder of Studio RDD and the inventor of the 'Math Of Design - Thinking Inside The Box' methodology. My award-winning design firm creates quality promotional merchandise from a wide array of materials custom made to suit every budget and need. I have made it my mission to build a product design studio unlike any other by placing an emphasis on highly personalized customer service. I work side by side with my customers from our first meeting until the roll-out of the product, ensuring that our shared vision is met or exceeded. I will be there at every turn with you – making your dreams a reality.

4What does “design” mean to you?

For me, Design is everything that has three dimensions. In my case design has even one more dimension that includes research and thinking inside the box process.

5What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

I love my work and a lot of topics/issues but I mostly enjoy working on projects that help or solve some kind of problems and make people live conveniently.

6To you, what makes a “good” design?

Timeless, practical and smart.

7Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

My "golden rule" is "Think Inside The Box". My style is: "The math of design – thinking inside the box". In my opinion, creativity, innovative development and design should be based on clear tools and formulas, on systematic progress and traceable patterns. Our brain relies on patterns in order to make sense of our surroundings and save energy, so why not use these existing tools to make sense of the chaos? I have my own self-constructed methodology that also gives me a more relaxed approach to design. Many professionals go out of their way to find that moment of epiphany, that a-ha moment. They are in desperate pursuit for inspiration. There is a lot of pressure on innovation and having to think outside of the box. Instead, we can use our existing toolbox and take inspiration from the methods and patterns of mathematical and logic rules. Who said thinking inside the box is bad? Using the right tools, it's inspiring!

8Tell us about your design process.

My life motto is 'Think Inside The Box'.

9Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?

Definitely yes!

10Congratulations! As the winner of the 2019 MUSE Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?

It still does not resonate in my mind that I have won. I am still a few steps away before the famous recognition!

11Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2019 MUSE Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

My project is The Math of Design - Thinking Inside the Box (self method).

12What was the biggest challenge with this project?

I am driven by the idea of combining mathematics and design. I love methodical thinking, and the lack of systematic methodology in the design world led me to simply develop my own 'maths of design'. Thus, the biggest challenge was to create the system.

13Where do you see the evolution of creative industry going over the next 5-10 years?

I think that 10 years from now, artificial thinking & age of machines will be waiting for us.

14Tell us something you have never told anyone else.

I like to drive sports cars and racing for a hobby.

15Who has inspired you in your life and why?

The most influential and inspiring businessmen/companies for me are:

IBM

Steve Jobs

Zaza Hadid

Google

In my private life, my man and family (mom/father/ friends/dog) inspire me.

16What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

I developed my skills with hard work and lots of reading and perseverance.
