Interview with the 2019 MUSE Design Awards Winner - Wang Shao Fong

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

I've been in the interior design industry for over a decade, continuing to pursue perfection and improvements for the past few years. During this period of time, I've won international awards from South Korea, France, China, etc. In the near future, I want to continue improving my craft so as to become a better version of myself.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?

When I was 25 and working in a department store, I found myself being attracted to the renovations done in the mall itself.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

I work as a designer in Tao Yuan City, Taiwan, where the speciality in the region is interior design. I am also in charge of management in the company as well.

4What does “design” mean to you?

Human nature.

5What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

Minimalist designs, because I'm a simple person and that reflects into the things I design as well.

6To you, what makes a “good” design?

A design is always catered to the human's character, so a good design is one that meshes well with the owner.

7Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

Each home has its history and beginnings. This is a private living residence in the urban region of Taoyuan, where an entrepreneurial couple lives. This couple enjoys the simplicity and feeling of ancient humanity. The hostess hoped to have a functional kitchen that can be both open and closed . Therefore, the kitchen is designed to blend the vintage and peaceful atmosphere with a hint of entrepreneurial ambition as per their requirement. From design to completion, this original work reflected every detail that was communicated with the owners.

8Tell us about your design process.

We have created a leisure space that meets the owner's expectations. In a constrained space, the capacity and shockproof capacities are particularly improved such that the owner can have enough space to store books, gifts, and family items. The intercoms and electric boxes at the entrance are integrated into the overall style.

9Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?

Taiwan may not have many natural resources, but we are allowed to freely express our creativity, which allows me to search for ideas and information in unlimited ways.

10Congratulations! As the winner of the 2019 MUSE Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?

Certainly. This award is an affirmation to what I can do, and that will just motivate us to keep working harder to design even better interiors.

11Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2019 MUSE Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

MUSE is an internationally renowned and credible awards competition. We've won two awards in our 1st year participating, so we would like to thank the jury panel for supporting our work.

12What was the biggest challenge with this project?

The height of the house presented a challenge for us because the structure forms several conflict zones; however, we ensured to maintain the space in a relaxed and comfortable way by constructing it close to the floor .

13How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?

I will continue to promote the MUSE Awards on our website.

14What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?

Free creative expressions, knowledge about architecture in general and the exploration of human nature.

15Where do you see the evolution of creative industry going over the next 5-10 years?

In the future, creative interior design will become mainstream, opening to an era full of different influences and styles.

16If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring MUSE Award submitter, what advice would you give them?

Don't give up! Always work for your dream, and then push yourself!

17What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the creative industry?

I recommend reading physical interior design books, because the information found in the Internet are always chaotic and busy, thus making it hard for you to decide on something.

18Tell us something you have never told anyone else.

Design is always about finding inspiration constantly, where you might even forget to eat or sleep. God will always give you a path to tread on.

19Who has inspired you in your life and why?

Even the smallest details in my life can give me the inspiration.

20What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

Winning is about struggle, effort and optimism, and never, ever giving up.

21Do you have anything else you would like to add to the interview?

No.
