In #BLUD you play as teenager Becky Brewster, who’s just moved into Carpentersville. Life is not going to be easy because as well as starting high school and making new friends, she discovers her mum was a vampire hunter and she’s the latest in this ancient bloodline. And, wouldn’t you know it, the town has just come under attack by a legion of the undead.
The narrative is based around Becky meeting, and ultimately destroying, the head vampire guy, Draugur (it was he who killed her Mum). To do this she will have to get some training from her mysterious mentor, Mr. Kristofferson, who is also moonlighting as the school janitor, translate the spells in her Mum’s grimoire, and collect various bits and pieces to build the ultimate vampire-killing weapon of mass destruction.
From the trailer for #BLUD, one would assume the game would be a simple game with some light combat here and there, nothing that would pose an issue or be troubling. Now, don't let the cutesy animation from the trailer fool you! #BLUD is a challenging game, with a difficult combat mechanic to master, as you would be attacking in eight different directions; up, down, left, right, and on the diagonal directions.
Often you would find yourself having to face multiple enemies at once, which makes it a challenging yet tricky gameplay where you need to dodge attacks as well as deliver them simultaneously. It is a brutal game where you would often be overwhelmed by the sheer amount of enemies on the screen at any one time.
Health in the game is represented by hearts, which can be increased by finding hidden heart pieces. When attacked by an enemy, you lose either half or a whole heart depending on the severity of the attack. Hearts can be replenished by consuming food items like candy bars or soda found during gameplay, or by using first aid kits purchasable with coins collected during your journey. However, one would feel limited by the inability to store food items for later use, unlike first aid kits.
Losing all five hearts results in respawning enemies and a restart of the level, although puzzles remain completed. Boss battles conclude each level, presenting varying difficulties. One notable boss battle involved dodging obstacles while reflecting missiles back at the boss, a refreshing departure from the game's usual style.
The story is broken up into chapters, in which Becky has a main task and several optional side quests, such as feeding a neighbour’s dog or putting up posters at different locations across the town. One will have to find keys, dig tunnels, blow up walls, or solve simple puzzles to progress, but what has to be done is not always obvious.
One standout feature of #BLUD is its visual style, drawing inspiration from 90’s cartoons for its world and character designs. This nostalgic aesthetic resonates with players who grew up watching similar cartoons. The game's sound design and character voices take a unique approach by incorporating gibberish speech inspired by Peanuts’ Miss Othmar, known for her trombone-like voice. This choice adds a charming and whimsical element to the game's audio experience.
Despite occasional challenges like hit detection issues and repetitive dungeons in the late game, #BLUD remains a highly enjoyable experience. Its engaging writing, creative boss battles, and flawless pixel art make it a game worth exploring. The game promises to provide a satisfying and entertaining adventure. #BLUD's trailer featuring and providing a nostalgic late 1990s cartoons and a fresh take on the Zelda-style gameplay is what made it a winner of the 2024 NYX Awards.
