Interview with the 2023 Vega Digital Awards Winner -
Kate Pine

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.
I am a Product UI/UX Designer based in Canada. I am an engaged individual who actively contributes to volunteer projects and takes part in competitions. My sincere curiosity about people, their viewpoints, and their life philosophies drives my enthusiasm for my profession, allowing me to gain a deeper understanding of users and empathize with them.
2What made you become/why did you choose to become a digital designer/artist?

I have always had a passion for creating beautiful and user-friendly things. I had a strong desire to become a designer but unfortunately, no design programs were offered at my city's university. As a result, I pursued studies in engineering.

Later, when I moved to Israel, I discovered excellent universities that offered comprehensive design programs, where I could truly learn to become a professional designer. I started from scratch and enrolled in a bachelor's degree program, despite already holding a master's degree in engineering. I was determined to become a true designer.

3What’s your favorite kind of digital design and why?

I am drawn to UI/UX because it allows me to blend creativity, problem-solving, and human psychology in a meaningful way. What I find most fulfilling is the opportunity to create experiences that positively impact people's lives.

UI/UX design also enables me to combine aesthetics and functionality, crafting interfaces that are not only visually appealing but also intuitive and enjoyable to use.

4To you, what makes a “good” design?
For me, a good design strikes a balance between user needs, business goals, and aesthetics. It involves understanding the users, aligning with business objectives, and creating visually compelling experiences.
5Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

Having experience working on production lines, I understand the significance of delivering high-quality products, and I perceive design in a similar manner. To achieve a good result, it is essential to follow the right sequence of steps, just like in a production process.

Additionally, technical skills play a vital role in ensuring the success of a design. Skills such as sketching, prototyping, composition, and attention to detail are crucial in creating visually appealing and functional designs. By combining these technical skills with a systematic approach, I strive to create designs that are not only visually pleasing but also meet the needs and expectations of users.

6Tell us about your design process.

Some people may perceive design as solely creating visual elements, it goes far beyond that. To develop thoughtful and effective designs, I extensively read literature related to design theory, user experience, and human-centered design.

Furthermore, I find inspiration and insight from other designers who have significantly contributed to the field. By studying their works, understanding their design philosophies, and learning from their experiences, I can broaden my design perspectives and incorporate valuable techniques into my practice.

In instances where I encounter design challenges or seek innovative solutions, I turn to case studies and real-world examples. Analyzing successful design case studies provides valuable insights into best practices, user feedback, and the impact of design decisions. It helps me refine my approach and make informed design choices.

7Where do you draw inspiration from?
I draw great inspiration from the work of other designers and find immense value in immersing myself in various forms of art. Exploring museums, and exhibitions, and attending theater performances enriches my visual abilities and expands my thinking.
8What current trends in digital design (or really anything digital related) are you most excited about?

I am deeply fascinated and excited by the potential of AI (Artificial Intelligence) in the field of design. The emergence of AI technologies has opened up new possibilities and opportunities for creating innovative and impactful designs.

AI offers designers powerful tools and techniques that can augment their creative process and streamline workflows. From automated design generation to intelligent data analysis, AI algorithms can assist in generating design concepts, optimizing layouts, and even predicting user preferences. This integration of AI into design processes enables designers to work more efficiently and explore design solutions that were previously unimaginable.
