Interview With The 2023 London Design Awards Winner – Krittin Leelakritsadakorn

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.
After graduating in industrial design, I started working in various designs until 6 years ago when I came to work in the packaging industry.
2What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?
The beginning came from wondering why designs had to have a patterns or colours. This made decide to study industrial design that combines both science and art.
3Tell us more about your agency/company, job profile, and what you do.
Our company is engaged in the production of paper box packaging. My responsibilities include structural design and packaging graphics, including finding new innovations or new techniques used in packaging to present to customers.
4What does “design” mean to you?
Design is always around us. It helps us make a decision. Both beauty and function for yourself. And of course, it can generate income and expand to do many other things.
5What’s your favorite kind of design and why?
I like designs that are simple but special or have stories and meanings hidden in them because it makes it all the more interesting.
6To you, what makes a “good” design?
Good design has a lot to do with it. The whole experience will always allow you to learn and seek new knowledge, including good equipment to support design.
7How did you come up with the idea for your award-winning design?
I think my award-winning packaging design concept is quite relevant today. Because I combined modern design principles with sustainability to reduce environmental problems.
8What was your main source of inspiration for this design?
The inspiration for this packaging design was to elevate the look of inexpensive products that is able to generate profit and it also has a distinctive identity.
9Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?
Thailand has some impact but not as intense because we always learn the culture of our own country as well as others in our design. We then apply it in the design for it to be suitable and perfect as possible!
10Congratulations! As the winner of the London Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?
It certainly means a lot to me and the company. It has made our company famous and reliable in the packaging industry. And on my part as a designer, it can create a good profile and reputation for me as well.
11Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2023 London Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?
Earlier in 2023, our team was focusing on entering global competitions. Then I saw that the London Design Awards was interesting and included a very cute and unique trophy. That's why I decided to submit my work to the contest. My packaging design focuses on simple but unique and hidden functions with because I am mindful of sustainable designs.
12What were the main challenges you faced during the design process, and how did you overcome them?
The challenge is to choose the right materials for the product and the packaging according to the design, structure and graphics. We tried our very best to adjust and print as many times to get the perfect result.
13How do you think winning this award will impact your future as a designer?
I think it will allow me to do things that I enjoy and interested in doing in the future to which I had already figured out what I wanted to do. Of course, it has to do with design!
14What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?

1. Always make me learn a variety of design work.

2. Prompted me to discover and improve my own style and design approach.

3. It gives inspiration and direction to continue doing in the future.

15What sets your design apart from others in the same category?
I think it's my design concept and the choice of environmentally friendly materials because I design with packaging sustainability in mind.
16Where do you see the evolution of design industry going over the next 5-10 years?
I think the design industry in the future will be more innovative and modern technology involved.
17What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the design industry?
In fact, being able to go out to various places to witness designs. Being able to experience the techniques of production will allow you to open up new worlds and ideas more clearly and quickly.
18Tell us something you have never told anyone else.
Hopefully, I can get higher and bigger rewards next year.
19Who has inspired you in your life and why?
Somchana Kangwarnjit because he is a respected Thai citizen who has received many world-class packaging design awards.
20What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?
Learning and developing yourself in packaging design ideas to be diverse. And find the right way for yourself to suit each contest stage and their own customers.
