Interview With The 2022 MUSE Design Awards Winner – Chen Chin Shu

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

Greetings, everyone!

My name is Chen Chin Shu; I have been in the design industry since establishing FE Design in 1996. Throughout these years, we have accumulated rich expertise and field experiences in manifesting, by way of design, a good number of cozy, attractive and functional interior projects.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?

In a hope that through design, more homeowners would realize and optimize their imagination of ideal homes and living spaces.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

I am the founder and the Design Director of FE Design. Our company specializes in spatial planning, style creation and fit-out execution.

4What does “design” mean to you?

Design at its core is very much about life. That is the key value and inspiration behind every FE Design’s work devoted to being, fineness and sensation.

As no single design fits for all, we always put ourselves in the clients’ shoes to experience and carefully observe in delivering a work that would ultimately suit the users’ real needs and anticipation.

5What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

I would say a style of ‘livable interiors’ that draws a delicate balance between aesthetics and practicability.

For it takes sincere communication, careful observations and logical planning in crafting a tasteful living space so deeply rooted in senses, beauty and tracks of life.

6To you, what makes a “good” design?

A good design possesses the subtle effect to positively guide its users towards respect and recognition for life. It will be human-centric, function-driven and an integrated work of art and sensibilities.

7Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

Contemporary, understated luxe, pared-back styles range among our signature approaches. We are well versed in space allocation, style creation, flow plan, fit-out construction and installation. Functionality and appropriateness that responds well to user needs and anticipation comes as the key consideration of our design.

8Tell us about your design process.

Design = life!

Every entrusted project is, so to speak, about fulfilling each homeowner’s ‘private kingdom’. We are attentive to the short, mid and long-term needs of the inhabitants and their families. The key is to remain in good communication from start and carry throughout site measurement, layout planning to technical implementation. We aim for a design that will ultimately snuggle up to user needs, in a fashion that form follows function.

9Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?

In a way, yes. When we reflect deeper on cultural heritage and global issues, it leads us further into unconventional, open-minded and pared-down design mindset, especially, the emphasis on eco-friendly and energy efficient approaches.

10Congratulations! As the winner of the 2022 MUSE Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?

Winning the award is a great recognition for the team’s continuous dedication and efforts. It marks a milestone and a reminder for us to stay true to our beliefs and keep on providing a better service.

11Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2022 MUSE Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

Our winning project ‘Delightful Elegance’ features a spacious floor-through serving multi-purposed as the owner couple's full time abode, personal hospitality hub and home office. Beyond aesthetic considerations, the design approach also includes well-thought functionalities, energy efficient measures and ERV system for enhanced air quality.

12What was the biggest challenge with this project?

How to bring the beautiful outdoor scenery to blend into interior design and form a natural connection with space and life.

13How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?

It has been such an honor!

We will keep up good efforts for further improvements and inspiration in creating more and better works.

14What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?

1. To design as a way of living.

2. Word-of-mouth referrals by satisfied clients.

3. When our design endured extended usage and remains favored by users.

15What makes your country specifically, unique in the design industry?

Trust and respect shown for expertise and craftsmanship. The design profession overall works towards wellness and better living of the users.

16Where do you see the evolution of design industry going over the next 5-10 years?

We see the trend towards diversification in terms of functionality and spatial planning, incorporating smart systems and AI to provide homeowners with convenience and quality experiences.

17If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring MUSE Design Awards submitter, what advice would you give them?

I would suggest that they acquire as many hands-on experiences as possible. For creativity, however boundless it may seem, could only be properly realized when in line with space, day-to-day living and user experiences.

18What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the design industry?

I would encourage them to start early either by taking academic major or entering field work. There are also vocational courses and training that is widely available. While all roads lead to Rome, perseverance remains the key to becoming a good designer.

19Who has inspired you in your life and why?

My family and the great team at FE Design. For their selfless support along my life path and in working together through the ups and downs.
