When comes to the food we eat every day, we always thank the person who prepared it for us. And we take the underappreciated farmer who toiled endless in the fields under the hot sun and heavy downpour just to keep the country fed.
In an effort to give these humble individuals of the countryside the appreciation the deserve, the National Peanut Board approached Vicarious PR and the YouTube legends over at Smosh to create an entertaining and informative video about farming to our current generation of young gamers. And what better way to do that than placing two less-than-qualified gamers in a peanut farm?
After an introduction to our hosts and Casey Cox, a peanut farmer that will serve as a tutor for peanut farming, we are given a detailed and insightful lesson on the current farming techniques and equipment that are being used in farming in the 21st century.
Later on, Casey shows our hosts and the viewers on how peanuts are traditionally harvested by hand, how to extract the produce from the plant, and what to look for when it is finally to pluck them from their roots and start making peanut-related goods. Shortly after, we get a glimpse on how peanuts are actually being harvested with more advanced and efficient machinery as well as a look at some classic vintage and legacy equipment that is used and still being used to harvest peanuts.
Afterwards, the team transitions from the outdoors and moves into a living room for a healthy session of Stardew Valley. After learning the most basic controls on how to navigate around the area and interacting with objects, Casey notes some of the items with childlike awe as she explores every little detail with a curious eye in the virtual world.
Eager to start planting her first crops, Casey drags her avatar over the town shop and starts buying more pumpkin seeds than she needs, and then starts to plant them by the end of the (in-game) day. She struggled, sure, but she’s got the heart!
Farming is by no means an easy job, but it is an honest at that and most youngsters like you and I today do not know the lengths these people go through to put food on our tables. And from all of us to you, we thank you farmers for feeding the world!
