1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.
I am Xinchen Li, an artist and designer specialising in metalsmithing, jewellery design, and installation art. My journey began in computer science, but I transitioned into the arts, captivated by the potential of materials and the act of making. My work often draws on themes of nostalgia, cultural heritage, and the interplay between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary innovation.
2What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?
I became an artist because of my fascination with how materials can hold and tell stories. The transition from computer science to art was driven by my need to explore creative freedom and my love for transforming everyday objects into meaningful, tangible pieces of art. It is my way of connecting with people through visual storytelling.

Currently, I work as a multidisciplinary artist and designer, creating wearable art, installations, and jewellery. My practice combines metalsmithing techniques, 3D printing, and innovative material use. I also teach art workshops to foster creativity and inspire others to explore their artistic potential.
4What does “design” mean to you?
Design is a bridge between functionality and artistry. It’s about creating objects or experiences that resonate emotionally, solve problems, and enhance our connection to the world around us.
5What’s your favorite kind of design and why?
I love designs that integrate personal narratives with innovative materials. My favourite designs often blur the line between art and utility, offering both aesthetic value and meaningful stories.
6To you, what makes a “good” design?
A good design is one that feels intuitive and purposeful while evoking emotion. It should balance innovation, functionality, and aesthetics, leaving a lasting impression.
7How did you come up with the idea for your award-winning design?
The idea for the Raindrop Iris Cocktail Ring came from my fascination with nature’s beauty and its symbolism. I wanted to create a piece that combined traditional craftsmanship with contemporary techniques, celebrating the elegance of the iris flower and the emotions it represents.
8What was your main source of inspiration for this design?
My main inspiration was the iris flower’s symbolism of hope, wisdom, and admiration. The dewdrops on its petals inspired the use of pearls, while the vibrant colours reflect the flower’s natural beauty.
9Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?
Absolutely. Growing up in China, I was surrounded by rich traditions and intricate craftsmanship, which continue to influence my designs. My work often explores themes of nostalgia, cultural identity, and the preservation of heritage through modern techniques.
10Congratulations! As the winner of the London Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?
Winning this award is an incredible honour and validates the effort and passion I’ve poured into my work. It also inspires me to continue pushing boundaries and sharing my vision with a wider audience.
11Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the London Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?
The Raindrop Iris Cocktail Ring celebrates the intricate beauty of nature through the lens of innovative design. Its multifunctionality, vibrant colour palette, and symbolism set it apart. I chose this project because it embodies my design philosophy—blending tradition and innovation to tell a story.
12What were the main challenges you faced during the design process, and how did you overcome them?
One of the main challenges was arranging the stones on the flower petals to achieve the desired gradient effect while ensuring structural stability and aesthetic balance. The transition from yellow to white to purple required precise planning to maintain a seamless flow of colours and proportions.
To overcome this, I experimented with various stone sizes, placements, and settings, creating multiple mockups and prototypes. This process taught me the importance of patience, precision, and creative problem-solving in the design journey.
