A product’s design should serve its intended purpose, and in many cases, that much is very true. But sometimes in the eyes of world-class designers worldwide, it’s not about how refined and efficient that design can accomplish its goal and intended use. It’s also about how good it looks while it’s doing it.
However, there are some designs that are so effective and good looking, their design language has not been altered in any shape or form for generations to come. Case in point, the newest seats introduced in the 2022 MUSE Design Awards Grand Jury Panel are the very same people whose designs are frequently looked up upon as timeless and effective designs that set the foundation for the next generation of function and beauty.
And without further ado, let’s dive deeper into what made their designs immortal to this day!
At first glance, Neil Poulton of Neil Poulton Industrial Design is a Scottish-born designer based in Paris who creates bestselling minimalist designs bought all over the world by satisfied clients. However, you may be using one of his designer products right now without noticing!
You see that chocolate-bar shaped hard drive with the funny rubber orange casing around it? Or maybe that tiny USB stick in a rubber jacket that makes it look like a grenade with a keychain? Let’s go even further, take a look at that fancy ceiling lamp hanging over your head at your desk now. Those are all designs that revolutionized industrial design for countless years and have sold over millions of units since release!
Neil has had a significant hand in creating iconic designs that have won awards from all over the world and instant bestsellers for globally-recognized manufacturers such as LaCie, Artemide, Megalit and Atelier Sedap. So much so that he was also featured in Time magazine’s ‘The Design 100 – The people and ideas behind today’s most influential design’, as well as having six of his iconic creations permanently residing within the Centre Georges Pompidou’s Permanent Contemporary Collection.
In 2013, Neil held his first major solo exhibition at the Glyptotheque (Zagreb) museum titled ‘design by neil poulton’, which became a defining moment in his career that cements his 30+ year legacy as a legendary one. And in 2018, his world-famous Scopas lamp designed for Artemide made its permanent debut at the Scottish Gallery of V&A Dundee in his home country of Scotland.
Most recently, Neil Poulton is named one of the le FD100 – the 100 designers who are sharing the aesthetics of French design on an international scale. Today, Neil continues to spearhead the next plane of industrial design as the Head of Agency and Principal of Neil Poulton Industrial Design. Right now, though, he’s now a prominent member of the 2022 MUSE Design Awards Grand Jury Panel. From all of us to you, Neil, we say thank you for the great designs and welcome to the family!
Hailing from the design capital of the world, Italy, Samuel Chuffart has made a statement within the automotive industry for putting his Italian twists on every major release of a car or EV concept with the company he helped found in 2010, ICONA Design & Engineering as a Global Design Director as only 1 of 2 designers at the time. Now, Samuel leads over 74 different designers from all walks of life at the ICONA Design Group overlooking design operations in Turin, Shanghai and Los Angeles.
For the past twelve years at ICONA Design, Samuel has helped bring the company to greater heights within the automotive industry and making a significant impact in new EV vehicles as well as mobility vehicles. Such designs that some of you gearheads and petrol addicts may recognize would be the Fuselage, Nucleus, and the Vulcano Titanium. The world’s very first supercar made entirely from titanium.
But before perfecting his Italian design, Samuel first learned the intricacies of designing good-looking cars with one of the Japanese powerhouses in the industry, Nissan. There, he started raking in awards for both concept and production cars that gave birth to the Nissan DNA today such as the Micra, Evalia concept and the Crossbow.
Shortly after learning the traditional and innovative design language of the Japanese, he turned his hand to the sophisticated and elegant design of Jaguar Land Rover where he unleashed his full power on the next big release of the L405 Range Rover in 2012.
Today, Samuel Chuffart continues to helm at the head of ICONA Design and pushing the boundaries of automotive design to new and undiscovered planes, be it for concept or production. As such, we are incredibly blessed to have such an experienced individual to have a seat within the Grand Jury Panel of the 2022 MUSE Design Awards!
