Qianying Zhu

Qianying Zhu is a contemporary jewelry artist merging cultural heritage with modern expression. Inspired by her grandfather, a renowned Chinese painter, she reimagines traditional Chinese symbols, especially the zodiac. Through metalwork, enameling, and gemstone setting, she creates dynamic, wearable pieces that blend history with modern aesthetics.

1Congratulations on your achievements in the MUSE Creative Awards! Could you start by introducing yourself or your agency? Can you also share a bit about your journey into your current industry?

My name is Qianying Zhu, and I am a contemporary jewelry artist exploring the convergence of traditional cultural heritage and modern artistic expression. Rooted in a deep appreciation for art from an early age, I was profoundly influenced by my grandfather, a renowned Chinese painter.

Growing up in an environment that valued artistic craftsmanship, I developed a strong foundation in various mediums, including sketching, ceramics, and seal carving, before channeling my creative vision into jewelry.

Jewelry, to me, is more than adornment—it is a medium for storytelling, cultural preservation, and personal expression. My formal education in jewelry design at the Savannah College of Art and Design introduced me to contemporary jewelry as a conceptual and sculptural practice, while my Master of Fine Arts in Metalsmithing from Cranbrook Academy of Art further refined my technical expertise and conceptual approach.

My work is distinguished by a reimagining of traditional Chinese symbols—particularly the zodiac—through a contemporary lens. By integrating metalwork, enameling, and gemstone setting, I create dynamic, wearable pieces that fuse historical motifs with modern aesthetics.

Each piece serves as an intersection of cultural dialogue and personal artistic exploration, bridging past and present through material and form.

Recognition at the MUSE Creative Awards as an independent contemporary jewelry artist has reinforced my commitment to innovation in the field.

As I continue to push the boundaries of jewelry as an art form, my focus remains on creating pieces that not only engage with tradition in a meaningful way but also challenge and expand the discourse on contemporary adornment.

2Can you share the story behind your success? What inspired its creation, and what do you feel it represents in today’s industry?

The primary inspiration behind my contemporary jewelry art comes from capturing those precious, fleeting moments in daily life.

I believe life is filled with subtle yet powerful instances—moments where a small act, a gentle touch, or a ray of sunlight can inspire us or offer healing, providing a brief respite from our fast-paced routines. These seemingly ordinary moments resonate deeply with me and become the emotional core of my designs.

In today’s rapidly evolving world, capturing and cherishing these fleeting experiences is particularly significant. My jewelry art aims to encapsulate and preserve these moments, allowing wearers to reconnect with feelings of comfort, inspiration, or joy whenever they interact with my pieces.

This approach not only reflects my personal artistic vision but also addresses a universal desire for emotional grounding, peace, and awareness amidst modern life's relentless tempo.

Through my work, I hope to remind people of the importance of pausing and appreciating life's subtle beauties, transforming everyday inspirations into wearable art that resonates emotionally and culturally.

3What do you believe set your project apart in such a competitive field? Were there specific elements or strategies that made it shine?

The key to my art lies in capturing precious, fleeting moments from everyday life. My primary inspiration comes from observing and cherishing these subtle yet profound experiences, which often go unnoticed in our busy, fast-paced world.

I believe capturing these moments is essential, as even the smallest interaction can offer comfort, inspiration, or joy.

My success in contemporary jewelry stems from my approach to integrating ease, humor, and emotional depth into each piece. Additionally, I incorporate elements of traditional Chinese culture, particularly the Chinese zodiac. By reimagining and redesigning these zodiac symbols, I use them as tangible representations of the concept of time, presented in fresh and innovative ways.

This fusion of contemporary aesthetics with meaningful cultural narratives sets my work apart. It resonates with those seeking a personal connection and encourages the wearer to reflect upon and appreciate their own meaningful moments.

4Every project has its challenges. Can you share a significant obstacle you faced during this process and how you overcame it?

One of the key challenges I encountered in my contemporary jewelry art was material selection and the integration of contrasting techniques. In this project, I combined modern and traditional methods to create a striking yet harmonious piece.

Specifically, I utilized advanced 3D printing technology to craft the necklace's main elements, featuring reimagined Chinese zodiac symbols that form the necklace's central body. In contrast, the clasp at the end of the necklace was fabricated using traditional metalworking techniques.

To enhance harmony between these distinctly different components, I meticulously painted the 3D-printed parts, not only enriching them with vibrant colors but also achieving a smooth surface that echoed the sleekness of the metal clasp.

For the metal clasp itself, I employed sandblasting techniques to create a playful texture reminiscent of popcorn buckets, intentionally softening the typical seriousness and heaviness associated with traditional metalwork. This treatment infused the clasp with a whimsical, contemporary aesthetic, aligning it emotionally and visually with the 3D-printed elements.

This combination introduced a striking contrast and balance, merging modernity with tradition.

The result is a cohesive and expressive piece, demonstrating how innovative experimentation can successfully bridge contrasting materials and methods, reflecting a humorous and contemporary approach to contemporary jewelry art.

5Winning an award of this caliber often brings recognition. What do you hope this achievement will mean for your career, your team, or your agency in the long run? Have you already noticed any changes or opportunities arising from this recognition?

Winning this award has been truly affirming for me as a contemporary jewelry artist. I view this achievement as significant validation of my personal artistic vision and the direction of my ongoing artistic research.

It has provided strong encouragement to continue exploring new creative possibilities and pushing the boundaries of jewelry art.

In the long run, I hope this recognition will open new opportunities for deeper artistic collaboration, exhibitions, and international exposure. It has already begun to bring greater visibility and has attracted interest from individuals and institutions who share my passion for culturally meaningful, innovative jewelry art.

I look forward to leveraging this momentum to further my artistic growth and continue sharing meaningful, engaging stories through my creations.

6The creative industry is constantly evolving. How do you view these changes, and where do you hope to position yourself in the future?

The creative industry is constantly evolving, driven by continuous innovation, shifting cultural perspectives, and technological advancements. I embrace these changes as exciting opportunities to further explore and expand my artistic expressions within contemporary jewelry design.

I particularly enjoy observing the emergence and development of new technologies and actively explore ways to integrate these innovations into my creative process and artwork.

Looking forward, I hope to produce more works that vividly reflect the spirit and characteristics of our current times. My goal is to continuously create jewelry pieces that embody contemporary aesthetics, address relevant cultural and emotional narratives, and resonate deeply with modern audiences.

By staying attuned to both artistic trends and the broader societal context, I aim to position myself as a jewelry artist whose works authentically represent the contemporary moment, engaging thoughtfully and meaningfully with the evolving dialogue of our era.

7Entering awards can be daunting for many, especially those just starting out. What would you say to individuals who have limited experience, or are hesitant to showcase their work in competitions? How can they build confidence and see the value in participating?

Entering awards or competitions can indeed feel intimidating, especially for individuals just starting their creative journey.

However, I believe it's important to continuously refine your work and approach it from various perspectives—considering concept, materials, craftsmanship, visual presentation, and expressive clarity.

There's no need to fear participating in awards or evaluations, nor should one fear potential failure, as these experiences are fundamentally beneficial.

Competitions provide invaluable opportunities to receive constructive feedback from professional judges, helping us gain deeper insights into our own creations and highlighting areas for improvement.

Additionally, the process itself is instrumental in building confidence. Each participation, regardless of the outcome, contributes to a stronger sense of self-assurance, guiding us toward greater artistic maturity and growth.

8If you could describe your award-winning entry in one sentence, what would it be and why?

My award-winning entry is a healing and uplifting expression that captures the quiet, fleeting moments of everyday happiness, reminding us to pause and appreciate the subtle joys woven into our lives.

Inspired by my reflections on time and personal experience, this piece emphasizes the often-overlooked value of daily moments that quietly enrich our lives, encouraging both myself and others to find serenity, warmth, and genuine happiness amid life's constant flow.

9Finally, what’s next for you? Any exciting projects or upcoming goals that you’d like to share with us and the audience?

Looking forward, I am actively exploring the possibilities offered by new materials and continuously experimenting with integrating traditional metalworking techniques with innovative materials, aiming to create distinctive and unexpected effects.

Additionally, I am currently preparing for my solo exhibition, which will serve as an exciting opportunity to present my artistic concepts in a more comprehensive and multidimensional manner.

Through this exhibition, I hope to further share my creative vision and deepen the audience's understanding and appreciation of my contemporary jewelry art.
