A Living Struggle
Signifying a woman's perseverance, "Survive in Katanga," a photography series by John T. Pedersen is a powerful portrayal of Moreen Ajambo, a 34-year-old mother of seven and a dedicated boxer at the Rhino Boxing Club in Katanga, one of Kampala's largest slum settlements. The photograph is a stark yet inspiring glimpse into the life of a woman who embodies resilience and determination amidst adversity.
Moreen Ajambo's day begins early in the morning with a rigorous run through Uganda's capital, Kampala. Her routine is relentless, as she then prepares breakfast for her children in the alley outside their cramped rented home. Living in such constrained conditions with her five youngest children, Ajambo's struggle is palpable.
After breakfast, her workday commences with cooking and delivering lunch to regular customers in Katanga. This task earns her a meager income of slightly more than one US dollar per day. Her day does not end there; Ajambo also works as a hairdresser, taking on assignments after her afternoon training sessions at the boxing club. Often working until midnight, she is able to generate additional income on a good week, a show of dedication and perseverance.
Life in Katanga's slum is unforgiving, leaving no room for rest. Despite the constant challenges, Ajambo's determination remains unshaken. Training and matches are moments of respite where she attempts to block out the overwhelming concerns about bills and school fees for her children. Her perseverance is a testament to her strength and courage, as she states, "My greatest strength is my heart and my courage. I have no fear, and if someone says that something is impossible, I get even more motivated."
Ajambo's aspirations extend beyond personal achievement. While participating in the Olympics is a significant goal, her primary dream is to break free from the slum and secure a better future for her children. "Survive in Katanga" is not just a photograph; it is a compelling narrative of hope, resilience, and the unyielding spirit of a woman who refuses to be defeated by her circumstances. Pedersen's work captures the essence of Ajambo's daily battle and her unwavering commitment to her family and dreams.
