As the co-founder of T.E.N and OnLand Studio, Xudong Zhu is an architect and urban designer committed to creating spaces that connect people, nature, and culture, seamlessly blending sustainability with innovation. Through his work, he strives to redefine how architecture fosters social engagement and environmental harmony.
I am Xudong Zhu, an architect and urban designer passionate about creating spaces that connect people, nature, and culture. I hold a Master of Architecture in Urban Design from Harvard GSD, where I was awarded third place in a design competition.
Before that, I earned a Master of Science in Architecture through a dual-degree program between Tongji University and Politecnico di Milano. Professionally, I co-founded T.E.N and OnLand Studio, where I lead projects that merge sustainability and innovation. My designs often integrate historical contexts with modern needs, aiming to inspire creativity and inclusivity.
Through my work, I strive to redefine how architecture fosters social engagement and environmental harmony.
My journey into design stemmed from a fascination with how spaces shape human experiences. Growing up in China, I witnessed the rapid transformation of urban landscapes and the tension between heritage and modernization.
This inspired me to pursue architecture as a means to balance tradition with progress. Design, to me, is a language that bridges people and their environments, and I find immense fulfillment in crafting spaces that evoke emotion, foster connection, and contribute to a sustainable future.
I am the co-founder of T.E.N, an architectural firm known for its innovative and context-sensitive designs. At T.E.N, we focus on creating spaces that merge functionality, sustainability, and cultural significance.
My role involves leading diverse projects, ranging from urban masterplans to commercial and public spaces, where I oversee concept development, design strategies, and team collaboration. Our approach emphasizes a deep understanding of each project's unique context—whether it’s reimagining an old industrial site, as in the Anji Youth Pulse Center, or crafting visionary masterplans.
We strive to push the boundaries of architecture, combining bold ideas with practical solutions to create spaces that are not only visually striking but also deeply engaging and sustainable.
Design is the art of problem-solving through creativity and empathy. It goes beyond aesthetics, shaping how people interact with spaces and their surroundings.
To me, design is a tool for storytelling, a way to merge functionality with beauty, and a means to improve lives while respecting the environment. It is a continuous dialogue between vision and reality.
I am particularly drawn to designs that harmonize natural and built environments, such as eco-friendly architecture and public spaces.
These designs resonate with me because they embody sustainability, foster community engagement, and create timeless connections between people and their surroundings. The balance of innovation and nature inspires my own work.
A good design transcends functionality and aesthetics. It is intuitive, contextually responsive, and emotionally engaging. It addresses the needs of its users, enhances the environment, and tells a meaningful story.
Sustainability and inclusivity are also critical, ensuring that the design contributes positively to both people and the planet.
My design style blends contextual sensitivity with bold modernity. It is characterized by clean lines, thoughtful integration of natural elements, and a focus on creating spaces that invite interaction.
Whether repurposing historical structures or creating new forms, I prioritize functionality, sustainability, and an immersive user experience.
My process begins with in-depth research into the site’s history, environment, and user needs. I then develop concepts that reflect both the functional requirements and the cultural narrative of the project.
Collaboration with clients, stakeholders, and my team is central, ensuring the design evolves organically. Prototyping and iteration refine the vision into a cohesive and impactful solution.
Absolutely! Growing up in China, a country rich in cultural heritage yet rapidly modernizing, I’ve developed a sensitivity to balancing tradition with contemporary demands.
This duality shapes my approach, inspiring me to create designs that honor cultural roots while addressing present and future needs.
Winning the 2024 MUSE Design Awards is a profound honor and recognition of the hard work and creativity of my team and collaborators. It validates our commitment to pushing design boundaries and reinforces our belief in creating meaningful, community-focused spaces.
This accolade also inspires us to continue exploring innovative solutions in architecture.
The Anji Youth Pulse Center is the world’s first youth-oriented commercial complex in a rural context, emphasizing outdoor sports and sustainability.
The design integrates existing factory structures into multifunctional spaces while introducing innovative circulation pathways and outdoor experiences. We chose this project because it reflects our values of creating vibrant, inclusive environments that harmonize with nature.
The greatest challenge was repurposing the old factory structures while introducing modern functions and circulation systems.
We had to ensure the seamless integration of the new and old elements, maintaining the site’s industrial heritage while creating dynamic spaces that meet the demands of a youth-focused complex.
