Mercari’s Pop-Up Store Pays You For Pre-Loved Items!

Japanese online marketplace Mercari opened its first pop-up store that pays you for pre-loved items to show you how easy it is to buy from them!

“Ugh, it’s like a pigsty in here. Clean up your room!” is a phrase we all heard from our parents. And we all remember the mountains of ‘collectible memorabilia’ that do absolutely nothing but collect dust which we end up selling years later for a quick buck or two at a pawn shop or Craigslist listing.

Using the PTSD-inducing phrase as a way to get rid of our junk and herd us into that minimalist lifestyle, and rewarding you with a few dollars for doing so, Mercari partnered up with the creatives at HERO Marketing to create a pop-up store to declutter your home and buy your pre-loved goods on the spot with no hassle at all!

Like other stores that pays you in cash for any pre-loved item like Cash Converters or a pawn shop, Mercari’s pop-up store will pay you up to $100 for all items that you do not need anymore. However, unlike other stores that perform this service, the entire layout of the store is stylized after a mini museum where visitors who enter the store can not only view the message of decluttering your home and living space, but also seeing different categories of goods put on display that showcases what items you can directly sell to Mercari, and to other users of the online marketplace.

To further demonstrate how easy it is to use the app to sell and trade your items to other users using the Mercari online marketplace, staff members will approach you with your pre-loved item in hand and takes it off your hands (literally!) by purchasing it from you on the spot. It’s that simple, really!

In addition to putting a good chunk of the marketing budget by HERO Marketing to that operation of buying used items from the visitors alone, HERO Marketing also spent a great deal of effort on the marketing side of things from Instagram posts all the way up to the in-mall jumbotron screen that certainly caught the attention of people who is looking to get rid of their things. And make money at the same time. And there are plans for Mercari to open up more pop-up stores in Los Angeles and Portland, too!
