Interview with Jing Wu from China

Jing Wu

Jing Wu is an artist and creative director shaped by experience across Shanghai, London, and Berlin. His practice blends global perspective with local cultural nuance, using concept-driven imagery to explore the tension and harmony between human society and emerging technologies.

My name is Jing and I am an artist and creative director who has worked in Shanghai, London and Berlin. My experience has provided me an outlook to create works that concern universal human, nature and new technologies.

I developed my career mostly in creative industry from commissioned works to self-initiated projects centered on art, illustration, and visual storytelling. I studied at the University of the Arts London.

I genuinely enjoy the act of making: whether it’s doodling on a scrap of paper or bringing an idea to life through a piece of art, illustration, or visual narrative. Creating something that surprises or resonates with people is deeply fulfilling.

In the commissioned projects, I focus on creating meaningful, visually compelling work that helps communicate ideas through art and imagery. For my own projects, I explore the interrelationship between new technology, nature and human through various media such as digital art, sketch or painting, where I can express myself freely.

The ability to see the unusual in the ordinary and transform it from 0 to 10. Creativity relies more on continuous practice than on innate talent.

An idea is simple and inspirational: something that works logically but arrives in an unconventional or intriguing way.

I spend about 30% of my time learning, diving into the boundaries and contexts of a subject. Then another 30% I’ll draw sketches to find some initial ideas. The rest is devoted to bringing the inspiration to life and refining every detail until it feels complete.

The moment I see the sketch brought to life. It’s the moment of truth when I discover whether the work needs to be redone or simply to keep going. It’s always full of surprises.

Playful, experimental and a bit of absurdism.

Absolutely. I was born and raised in Shanghai, a fast-developing metropolis infused with multi-cultures. For me, it’s a crossroad where China meets the world, and where the past meets the present. That duality shapes my artistic voice.

Winning a Silver is an encouraging start, and I hope to push further in the future.

Inspired by the 12 Zodiac Animals, this series portrays them as free-spirited beings with their own identities. The artworks explore how these animals might break away from human-imposed symbolism and wander into new realms within their own metaverse.

The NFT collection blends free-hand drawings with digital graphics.

Reimagining the animals in a fresh, contemporary way and illustrating an entire universe for them that doesn’t actually exist.

I’m currently working on a book featuring the winning pieces, which allows me to honor both the artwork and the ideas behind it. This recognition motivates me to push my artistic boundaries even further.

Seeing remarkable works, meeting fascinating (and sometimes wonderfully strange) people, and having a shared purpose: to keep creating.

China’s scale and rapid development create endless opportunities for artists and creatives to grow and evolve.

As technology evolves, so does creativity. We’ve moved from traditional formats to new media. The way artists create and learn will transform dramatically. Yet one thing stays constant: art will always respond to human needs and human stories.

Stay open-minded and remain committed to moving forward.

Use your phone, your pencil and paper wisely to keep capturing things that inspire you. Short online courses are also incredibly accessible and practical for learning techniques.

I have never planned to be an artist!

My dad, Andy Warhol and The Beatles!

Stay receptive, stay curious, and keep working toward your vision.

Thank you for the Silver MUSE Creative Awards! I couldn’t be happier with this achievement.
