Zeyuan Zhang is a Senior UX Designer at Citi, designing SaaS solutions for Wall Street traders. With a strong academic and design background, his work has earned prestigious recognition. Zeyuan also runs a consulting company in Shanghai, offering UX and product design services.

I’m Zeyuan Zhang, a seasoned product and user interface designer with a strong foundation in both academia and the design industry. As a Senior UX Designer at Citi, I’ve had the opportunity to make impactful contributions to the field, earning recognition through several prestigious awards.

I chose to become a product designer because I have always been passionate about interacting with people and understanding their needs. The ability to identify what users truly require in a product and then work to improve it excites me.

Product design allows me to combine creativity with empathy, ensuring that the solutions I create are not only functional but also deeply aligned with user needs. The process of refining and enhancing products to deliver better experiences is what drives me in this field.

I currently work at Citi as a Senior UX Designer, where I focus on designing SaaS software solutions for Wall Street traders. My role involves creating intuitive and efficient user interfaces that cater to the high demands of the financial industry.

In addition to my work at Citi, I founded my own consulting company in Shanghai, where I provide professional consulting services in UX and product design.

To me, design is all about creating joyful and meaningful experiences for customers. It’s a powerful tool that allows us to transform ideas into products that not only meet user needs but also bring delight and satisfaction.

Design is more than just aesthetics; it’s about understanding people and using creativity to enhance their interactions with the world around them.

My favorite kind of design is minimalist design. I appreciate how it allows the pure beauty of shape and material to stand out without unnecessary distractions. Minimalism emphasizes simplicity and clarity, which I believe leads to more effective and aesthetically pleasing solutions.

To me, a “good” design is one that is intuitive, allowing users to effortlessly understand and interact with it without needing instructions.

My design style is user-centric. I focus on understanding the needs and behaviors of users, making sure every design decision is driven by the goal of enhancing the user experience.

My design process begins with the Double Diamond approach, which helps me thoroughly understand the user and define the problem. I start by conducting user research and benchmarking to gain insights into user needs and industry standards.

Next, I move into the ideation and prototyping phase, where I create and test prototypes to validate the ideas. I continuously iterate on the design based on feedback and testing results to refine the solution.

Finally, I work towards launching the product, ensuring it meets both user expectations and business goals.

Yes, my country and its cultural heritage significantly impact my design process. Traditional elements such as color palettes, material choices, and design philosophies deeply influence my work.

Receiving the 2024 NY Product Design Awards is a significant recognition of our design approach. It validates the hard work, creativity, and user-centric focus that our team and company put into every project.

The “Tie-Dye Revival” project, which I entered into the 2024 NY Product Design Awards, revitalizes the traditional tie-dye technique of the Bai minority in Southwest China through an innovative mobile app. This app bridges the gap between ancient craftsmanship and modern consumer needs, offering customization options and an engaging dye process visualization game.

The project not only fosters cultural preservation but also significantly boosts local artisans’ income, generating over $160,000 in its first year. I chose this project because it showcases how design can meaningfully connect tradition with innovation to create a positive impact.

The biggest challenge with the “Tie-Dye Revival” project was finding a way to effectively bridge the gap between the traditional tie-dye craftsmanship of the Bai minority and the modern digital world.

Winning an award has significantly enhanced my practice and career by validating my design approach and increasing my company visibility in the industry.

Creativity, honesty and authenticity!

Its rich cultural heritage that seamlessly blends tradition with modern innovation. The deep-rooted craftsmanship and historical influences provide a strong foundation, while the rapid technological advancements and contemporary design philosophies create a dynamic and diverse design landscape.

Over the next 5-10 years, I see the design industry evolving towards a seamless fusion of human creativity with AI as a powerful guide and tool.

AI will increasingly assist designers by automating routine tasks, providing data-driven insights, and offering innovative suggestions, allowing designers to focus more on the creative and conceptual aspects of their work.

Embrace your creativity and go wild with your ideas. Don’t be afraid to push boundaries and explore unconventional approaches. Innovation often comes from taking risks and thinking outside the box, so trust your instincts and let your imagination lead the way.

I would recommend a few key resources for someone looking to improve their skills in the design industry. First, prioritize networking by connecting with top design leaders and professionals in the field. Engaging with their work, attending industry events, and joining relevant online communities can provide valuable insights and inspiration.

Additionally, seek out mentorship opportunities, as learning directly from experienced designers can accelerate your growth and broaden your perspective. Lastly, stay updated on industry trends and continuously refine your skills through practice and experimentation.

My consulting company grew from 0 clients to over 50 in just one year!

My parents have been my greatest inspiration in life. Their unwavering dedication and hard work have always motivated me to strive for excellence.

My key to success is patience and perseverance. I’ve learned that success doesn’t happen overnight; it requires consistent effort and the determination to keep going, even when faced with setbacks.

Thank you for the opportunity to share my thoughts and experiences. I’m excited about the future and look forward to creating more joyful and impactful designs.
