I am Narendra Lakshmana Gowda, a software engineering leader with a passion for building transformative platforms that redefine technology. With over 16 years of experience, I specialize in developing distributed systems that enhance business efficiency and customer experiences. My expertise spans scalable data gateways, communication platforms, and safety-driven solutions, all designed to optimize operations.

2What inspired you to pursue innovation in your field?

My inspiration to pursue innovation in technology comes from the belief that technology has the power to solve real-world problems and create a positive impact on people’s lives. Growing up in a place with limited access to resources, I saw firsthand how technology could be a catalyst for progress.

This fueled my passion to push boundaries and find new ways to apply emerging technologies like distributed systems, and platform engineering to address complex challenges. For me, innovation isn’t just about advancing technology, it’s about driving meaningful change and making the world more connected, accessible, and efficient.

Walmart Global Tech is the technology powerhouse behind the world’s largest retailer, driving innovation to deliver seamless customer experiences and transform retail operations. Our team works on a variety of cutting-edge projects aimed at enhancing both customer satisfaction and operational excellence. As part of Walmart Global Tech, I’ve led and contributed to several impactful platforms that touch every aspect of the retail ecosystem.

Our team plays a crucial role in building platforms that power the core capabilities behind Walmart’s omni-channel operations, enabling seamless integration between online and in-store experiences. These platforms are used by stores in their daily operations, from stocking and receiving products to helping customers directly in the aisles. Whether it’s managing inventory, ensuring items are always available, or handling curbside pick-up and delivery, our systems provide the foundation for smooth, efficient processes.

During emergencies, our communication systems ensure the safety of associates and customers by delivering timely notifications. All of these capabilities work together to create a connected, efficient shopping experience, bridging digital and physical retail.

One of the key projects is the Inventory Management Platform, designed to manage stock levels efficiently across Walmart’s global operations, optimizing supply chain processes and ensuring that stores and fulfillment centers always have the right products at the right time. Another crucial platform is the Communications Platform, which enables seamless communication and notifications across thousands of facilities, especially during emergencies like hurricanes or fires. It helps safeguard associates and customers, delivering real-time alerts that ensure safety and coordination.

Additionally, the Data Gateway and GraphQL Federation Platform helps streamline data access for different services, improving overall data management and integration for various Walmart systems. Every project is driven by the vision of using technology to create more efficient, scalable, and secure systems that deliver value both internally and to millions of customers around the world.

To me, innovation means creating solutions that not only solve immediate challenges but also anticipate future needs. It’s about pushing boundaries, questioning traditional approaches, and finding new ways to make systems more efficient, scalable, and impactful.

Innovation isn’t just about technology—it’s about thinking differently, taking calculated risks, and driving meaningful change that improves people’s lives, whether through smarter platforms, better user experiences, or seamless business operations. Ultimately, it’s about progress and using creativity to transform vision into reality.

5Can you briefly describe your innovation and its impact?

My work focuses on building scalable, distributed platforms that power critical operations in retail. One such innovation is the development of omni-channel platforms that enable seamless integration between physical stores and online systems, streamlining core processes like stocking, receiving, curbside pickup, and delivery. By creating systems that enhance both operational efficiency and customer experience, we’ve helped improve day-to-day functions for associates while ensuring fast, reliable service for customers.

This approach not only enhances productivity but also improves the safety of store associates during emergencies, making a lasting impact on retail operations and the customer experience.

Through my YouTube channel, Tech Dummies, I’ve been able to reach over 180,000 subscribers, helping more than 400,000 professionals around the world. The channel focuses on breaking down complex topics related to distributed systems, cloud architecture, and platform engineering.

By providing hands-on tutorials and practical insights, I’ve helped countless engineers overcome technical challenges, crack interviews, and accelerate their careers. The channel has become a resource for both beginners and seasoned professionals looking to deepen their understanding of engineering systems.

My research spans diverse fields, including AI in healthcare, federated learning, and digital twins. By addressing challenges such as data privacy in machine learning and improving diagnosis methods for Alzheimer’s, I’ve aimed to push boundaries in the application of technology. Each research project not only contributes to the academic community but also provides practical solutions that can lead to better healthcare accessibility and secure global collaboration. This work plays a role in shaping the future of AI and its ethical, impactful deployment.

Mentorship has been a critical aspect of my work, where I’ve guided individuals and teams, helping them develop technical skills and leadership abilities. I’ve had the privilege of working with engineers at various stages of their careers, supporting their growth through 1:1 mentoring sessions, workshops, and talks. Watching others succeed as they implement the skills we’ve discussed and seeing them grow into leadership roles has been incredibly rewarding.

My aim has always been to share knowledge and provide guidance that extends beyond just solving technical problems—encouraging holistic development in their careers. Writing blogs has allowed me to share insights from my experience and research with a wider audience. Covering topics like distributed systems, platform engineering, and AI, my blogs have become a go-to source for engineers and professionals looking for in-depth analysis and real-world solutions.

Through these articles, I aim to break down complex concepts into digestible formats, enabling readers to apply these ideas to their projects and challenges. The impact of blogging has been the ongoing engagement with the tech community, fostering discussion and learning while contributing to the continuous evolution of the industry.

6How did you come up with the idea that led to your award-winning innovation?

The idea that led to my award-winning innovation came from a deep focus on understanding both customer pain points and business needs. In every project, I look at what’s not working efficiently and how it impacts the end-user experience. In many cases, the customer frustration stems from gaps in technology that affect day-to-day operations, from stocking and inventory management to delivering seamless omnichannel experiences like curbside pick-up or emergency responses.

By diving into these challenges, along with aligning product and business goals, I was able to drive innovation that addressed the core issues. For me, it’s always about finding solutions that improve operational excellence while also delivering satisfaction for the customer—simplifying complex processes and creating platforms that make a real difference. This approach guided me in crafting solutions that not only met but exceeded expectations, leading to the recognition through awards.

7What challenges did you face during the innovation process, and how did you overcome them?

During the innovation process, one of the biggest challenges was aligning diverse stakeholders with different priorities and understanding the true scope of the problem. Whether it was balancing the technical needs of the engineering team, the business goals from leadership, or the customer needs, bringing all of them together under one cohesive vision took time and effort. Another challenge was managing the complexity of integrating new solutions into existing systems without disrupting daily operations.

To overcome these, I focused on constant communication and transparency with all stakeholders, ensuring we were all aligned on the project’s goals and timelines. I also adopted an agile approach, breaking the innovation process into smaller, manageable phases, allowing us to test and iterate solutions quickly. The iterative feedback loop from both the team and end-users helped me refine the solution continuously.

Moreover, I kept a strong focus on the end user’s experience, which acted as a constant guide to ensure that our efforts were always directed towards a meaningful and impactful outcome.

Thank you! Winning this award is both humbling and motivating. It reinforces my commitment to driving innovation and making a tangible impact through technology. This recognition fuels my desire to push even further, exploring new avenues for leveraging AI, cloud solutions, and distributed systems to address real-world challenges. It also strengthens my dedication to mentoring and empowering the next generation of engineers, as I believe knowledge-sharing is crucial for long-term success.

In terms of future goals, this award has given me more confidence to continue leading larger, more complex projects while fostering collaboration across industries. It’s also inspired me to broaden my influence beyond just technical execution, aiming to make a more profound impact through leadership and community involvement.

Moving forward, I’ll continue working on developing solutions that align with both customer satisfaction and business needs, driving sustainable innovation while staying grounded in the real-world problems I aim to solve.

9Who or what has been your biggest source of support throughout your innovation journey?

My biggest source of support throughout my innovation journey has undoubtedly been my family and mentors. My family has always provided unwavering encouragement, giving me the strength to overcome challenges and stay focused on my goals. They’ve been my rock, offering emotional support during the tough times and celebrating the wins with me.

Equally important have been my mentors, who have guided me with their experience, wisdom, and perspective. They’ve helped me navigate the complexities of both technical and leadership challenges, always pushing me to think beyond the obvious and strive for meaningful impact. Their guidance has been invaluable, providing me with the tools and mindset necessary to innovate, solve problems, and continuously grow as both a leader and an engineer.
