Lin Hua Huang, a seasoned interior design director with multiple national certifications in Taiwan, specializes in crafting innovative and human-centered designs for residential and commercial spaces. Renowned for transforming challenges into creative possibilities, his work reflects a deep commitment to combining technical expertise with a warm, client-focused approach, delivering spaces that inspire joy and connection.

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

With decades of experience as a design director in interior design, I hold several national certifications in Taiwan, including the Level B Technician for Building Interior Installation and Repair Management, the Professional Designer and Constructor Certificate, and the Accessibility Facilities Inspection Personnel Certificate.

My design work—which encompasses residential homes, renovations of older houses, commercial spaces, and space remodeling—is grounded in professional knowledge that has been approved by national authorities. Each project adheres to regulations and incorporates innovative, human-centered designs. I am committed to transforming the impossible into the possible, creating warm and welcoming homes for everyone.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become an architectural / interior designer?

From an early age, I have exhibited a profound interest in programs and information pertaining to interior design and the remodeling of living spaces. Throughout my academic journey, I faced numerous challenges in my pursuit of excellence in this field, while simultaneously exploring the vast array of creative possibilities that interior design offers.

I possess a keen ability to engage with individuals and effectively articulate and comprehend their needs. Observing the joy and emotional responses of clients within the spaces I have designed provides me with a significant sense of accomplishment. This motivates me to continue disseminating such joy and to create innovative and aesthetically pleasing environments for a broader audience.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

Unlike many interior design firms, our organization places a significant emphasis on attentive listening and effective communication. This methodology enables us to swiftly comprehend the valuable insights of our clients and translate those ideas into concrete design solutions, ultimately culminating in the realization of their envisioned spaces.

We provide fully customized designs for European-imported system furniture, which includes wardrobes, beds, storage cabinets, dining tables, display cabinets, and Japanese-style storage options. Beyond design, we oversee the quality of construction and prioritize user experience. Our company manages a comprehensive range of interior decoration projects, as we believe that a diverse portfolio allows for a more unified and efficient overall process.

4What does “design” mean to you?
Design serves as a vital form of self-expression, embodying an exceptional process of self-transcendence imbued with boundless hope and creativity. Through a commitment to continuous improvement, I endeavor to actualize the concepts within my mind, creating designs that are not only innovative but also resonate with a diverse audience. My goal is to achieve a harmonious balance between scientific rationality and artistic sensibility.
5What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

I hold an appreciation for all design styles, as I believe that design should not be restricted or narrowly defined. When we liberate ourselves from limitations, we can foster the ability to create aesthetically pleasing and innovative works.

For example, within a modern design framework characterized by a palette of black, white, and grey tones, I would employ a variety of materials to establish a visual equilibrium between wood and stone. This approach may be regarded as a blend of European wooden style and contemporary design, underscored by the presence of streamlined metal lines. Ultimately, this methodology reflects a design philosophy that I favor and one that I believe will resonate positively with users.

6To you, what makes a “good” design?

The paramount consideration in design is the user's preferences and experience. A design that one might perceive as flawless yet fails to address the user's needs cannot be classified as an effective design; it fundamentally lacks empathy.

As interior designers, we leverage our professionalism and extensive experience to discern the style and approach that most appropriately aligns with each user. We endeavor to balance the requirements of others with our own artistic principles; only then can we accurately characterize a design as successful.

7Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

My design philosophy predominantly emphasizes the use of wood and stone to establish a harmonious balance between a warm environment and luxurious elegance. Recently, I have been exploring a modern design direction. I possess a strong proficiency in optimizing and maximizing storage space within residential settings, ensuring that both aesthetic appeal and clean lines are maintained.

Additionally, I prioritize consistency in the design of interior spaces. I engage in active listening to uncover the client’s true vision—an inner imagination they may find difficult to articulate—and I effectively translate that vision into a tangible design.

8Tell us about your design process.

It is imperative to carefully consider the preferences of the user. The user’s needs are informed by our expertise in interior design, as well as relevant regulations and our extensive experience in construction. We strive to adopt the perspective of the user, listening attentively and engaging in thoughtful discussions to exchange ideas.

This collaborative approach enables us to explore all achievable design options while ensuring the proper allocation of the budget. Furthermore, we engage in comprehensive research to effectively articulate the user’s vision to all stakeholders. This methodical process is essential for successful project outcomes.

9Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?
Taiwan is a place that warmly welcomes and integrates a variety of cultures. Its open social atmosphere, along with the prevailing public sentiment, promotes respect and tolerance for diverse religions and lifestyle practices. The harmonious blending of these cultural heritages has significantly influenced my design process, prompting me to adopt a more innovative approach and consider a broader range of possibilities.
10Congratulations! As the winner of the NY Architectural Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?
This initiative represents the inaugural opportunity for our team to gain visibility on an international scale and to achieve its first recognition beyond domestic boundaries. It serves not only as a fundamental starting point but also as an aspiration to present an array of exceptional designs to a global audience in the future.
11Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the NY Architectural Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

This project exemplifies a diverse array of design elements that converge to create a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing environment, characterized by both clarity and ingenuity. The rationale for selecting this project for consideration in the award competition lies in its extensive use of stone, which facilitates a vivid representation of natural textures.

Additionally, warm wood materials are incorporated to enhance the space, providing a balance of the flowing characteristics of stone with the comfort and stability of wood. The objective is to harmonize these contrasting elements and to effectively communicate this design philosophy through the competition.

12What was the biggest challenge with this project?
The primary challenge lies in optimizing space utilization while ensuring that each area fulfills its designated purpose. Furthermore, it is essential for these spaces to meet the expectations of their users. For instance, incorporating substantial amounts of transparent glass not only effectively delineates the various areas but also enables users to observe a child's movements from all parts of the home, thereby enhancing safety.
13How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?
Winning this award has provided numerous opportunities for me and my team to present ourselves to the global audience, enabling others to become acquainted with our work and appreciate our designs. More significantly, I aspire for the world to recognize the various design concepts we have implemented to enhance diverse spaces, demonstrating that these ideas can be effectively realized in practice.
14What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?

1. It is imperative to listen to the narratives of diverse users, empathize with their emotional experiences, engage in meaningful communication, and share in their feelings.

2. The transformation of the impossible into the possible was accomplished through diligent trial and error, as well as meticulous preparation.

3. Upon the completion of the project, it was the manifestations of emotion among participants, their radiant expressions, and the atmosphere of optimism that left a lasting impression on me.

15What makes your country specifically, unique in the design industry?
Cultural diversity and inclusiveness, coupled with the application of innovative materials and exemplary execution, distinguish our organization. We adhere to professional construction standards and maintain rigorous self-imposed requirements that reflect a craftsman spirit. Furthermore, our competitive construction costs in comparison to other regions position us as a unique entity capable of transforming the impossible into achievable outcomes.
16Where do you see the evolution of design industry going over the next 5-10 years?
Innovation is an unavoidable aspect of progress. It is essential for individuals who are committed to continuous improvement and the cultivation of a distinctive design style to lead the evolution of the design industry. My aspiration is to emerge as a creator of our era, rather than merely conforming to prevailing trends.
17If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring NY Architectural Design Awards submitter, what advice would you give them?
Remain steadfast in your original aspirations, continually reflect on your passion for design, have unwavering confidence in your creativity and capabilities, pursue ongoing improvement, and do not shy away from the possibility of failure.
18What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the design industry?
Engage deeply with the natural and urban environments that surround us, and cultivate an appreciation for the various manifestations of beauty. It is essential to reflect on one’s own experiences and insights as they relate to both nature and the city. Design is an inherent aspect of our daily lives, present in every detail and moment.
19Tell us something you have never told anyone else.
Design is not immutable; it is subject to change and evolution. Historical design styles may regain popularity at some point in the future.
20Who has inspired you in your life and why?
All processes in life serve as sources of inspiration for my work. The cliffs of the canyon, characterized by their dynamic interplay of light and shadow, significantly influence my approach to stone. Additionally, the sacred trees that rise majestically among the cliffs contribute a distinct visual impact to the overall scene. Upon close observation, one can appreciate that everything is presented in an exceptionally beautiful manner.
21What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?
The pursuit of excellence is driven by a steadfast commitment to progress. Success is not a definitive outcome; rather, it is the ongoing process of continuous improvement that enhances the potential for growth in my designs.
22Do you have anything else you would like to add to the interview?

I would like to express my sincere gratitude for this award, which provides us with the opportunity for global recognition. Additionally, I appreciate this interview, as it allows me to convey my most profound thoughts. Our achievements are the result of deliberate effort and are not to be taken for granted.

Receiving an award does not inherently confer importance. Rather, it is the collective hard work and commitment of all individuals involved—particularly our dedicated staff—that have made this recognition possible. Without their unwavering efforts, we would not have attained such commendable results. Once again, I extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone involved.
