Kaj Ransvi

Kaj Ransvi’s passion for design is driven by a desire to improve the world around him. He thrives on refining everyday products, always seeking smarter solutions. From an early age, his fascination with technical drawings and form in products and architecture shaped his approach to innovation.

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

From a young age, I was fascinated by technical drawings and drawn to the unique shapes found in both products and architecture. Though I don’t have formal education in design, my passion for design and relentless curiosity have been my guiding forces. I’ve learned through experience, constantly exploring new ideas, observing the world around me, and refining my craft.

This self-driven approach has shaped my journey and deepened my understanding of design, allowing me to grow both creatively and professionally.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?

My motivation to design stems from a deep passion for improving the world around me. Every day, I’m driven by the challenge of finding better solutions for products I encounter.

When I see an opportunity to enhance a product or improve its function, I feel compelled to figure out how it can be done more effectively. This constant drive for innovation and improvement is what fuels my creativity and commitment to design, inspiring me to always push for better solutions.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

I run a small design studio where I handle a wide range of projects from all around the world. Despite the studio’s size, as I am the sole designer working here, I take pride in managing every aspect of the design process personally. This hands-on approach allows me to maintain a high level of attention to detail and ensures that each project aligns with my vision and standards.

Working independently also gives me the flexibility to focus on creating unique, innovative solutions that meet the specific needs of each client while fostering my passion for design.

4What does “design” mean to you?

For me, design is a multifaceted concept that encompasses a vast range of elements. It can be as large as the shape of a building or as small as the intricate detail of a piece of jewelry. It spans from complex industrial products to the simple design of everyday items like a milk carton.

What truly stands out is when a designer pours their soul and passion into every aspect, ensuring that the product is not only functional but also optimized for the user. Good design goes beyond aesthetics – it's about creating something that serves its purpose effectively while enriching the user's experience.

5What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

One of my favorite designs is the lounge chair by Charles and Ray Eames. I admire it for its timeless elegance and flawless combination of form and function. The chair seamlessly blends ergonomic comfort with modern aesthetics, making it not just a piece of furniture but an iconic work of art.

The attention to detail in its design, the use of high-quality materials, and its ability to adapt to various environments and tastes make it a masterpiece. It’s a perfect example of how thoughtful design can elevate everyday experiences while remaining relevant for decades.

6To you, what makes a “good” design?
For me, great design is about perfection in every detail—size, color, texture, and proportions all harmonizing seamlessly. It’s not just about aesthetics, but how these elements work together to create a cohesive and functional experience. When all aspects align flawlessly, the design feels effortless, balanced, and impactful, making it truly exceptional.
7Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

I would describe my design style as futuristic, bold, elegant, sophisticated, smooth, with influences of rocker and hip-hop culture. However, I don't strictly work within a defined style—my design approach is more dynamic and ever-evolving. I find inspiration in contrasting elements and explore a wide range of aesthetics to reflect different emotions and stories through my work.

What drives me is the challenge of creating something that feels innovative, functional, and aesthetically appealing. Each project encourages me to think outside the box and adapt my design approach to best serve its purpose while pushing boundaries. Ultimately, my goal is to produce designs that leave a lasting impression.

8Tell us about your design process.

My design process begins with curiosity and observation. I start by identifying a problem or an opportunity for improvement, focusing on functionality, user experience, and aesthetics. Research is a crucial step—I study the target audience, materials, and trends to ensure the design is relevant and effective.

Sketching and brainstorming help translate ideas into concepts, which I refine using digital tools like CAD and 3D modeling. Prototyping and testing are key to evaluating practicality and usability, making necessary adjustments along the way. Throughout the process, I prioritize attention to detail, quality, and sustainability, ensuring the final product meets my high standards.

9Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?

I live in Sweden, but I believe my design style is a blend of influences I've gathered from around the world. Sweden's culture and heritage have certainly shaped my approach, emphasizing minimalism, functionality, and sustainability. However, my exposure to diverse cultures enriches my creativity, allowing me to incorporate various perspectives.

The pros of designing in Sweden include access to innovative design resources and a strong emphasis on quality. On the flip side, the relatively small market can sometimes limit the scale of certain projects, but it also encourages a global mindset in my work.

10Congratulations! As the winner of the 2023 MUSE Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?

Winning in the 2023 MUSE Design Awards is an incredible honor and a testament to the hard work, creativity, and passion that define my approach to design. It validates the countless hours and dedication poured into creating meaningful, impactful designs.

This recognition not only highlights my efforts but also inspires me to push boundaries and continue striving for excellence. For my studio, it serves as a milestone that reflects our commitment to quality and innovation. Being acknowledged on such a prestigious platform is both humbling and motivating, reinforcing the importance of thoughtful, well-crafted design in shaping a better world.

11Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2023 MUSE Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

Talking about global pollution is vital because designers have the power to influence sustainable solutions. By addressing these issues, we can create products and systems that minimize environmental impact, inspire change, and promote a healthier planet. Design isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about responsibility and shaping a better future for all.

The Reminder is an exquisite watch crafted to help you keep time and reflect on the effects of climate change. It is a statement piece featuring a rusty rough surface, just as the dirty surface of the earth, underneath the surface there are laser cut out shiny gold details; The fantastic planet we have and love! And a sapphire glass covering the date display with a cyclop lens to remind that every day is important, the only number is 11 showing that there is still time for changes, as to say in ”The eleventh hour”.

The design subtly alludes to global issues to remind the wearer about the importance of environmental protection. Its thought-provoking strap is printed with inspiring words about the need to take action against pollution and global warming. An exquisite earth map on the crown completes the design. When you see the watch from a distance it looks clean and at short distance you find it very interesting and easily starts a conversation.

12What was the biggest challenge with this project?

The biggest challenge with this project was ensuring every aspect aligned with sustainability and ethical standards. Developing sustainable packaging required meticulous planning to balance environmental considerations with functionality. Selecting high-quality materials was equally important to guarantee durability and a premium feel.

Additionally, finding a producer committed to providing a fair and ethical working environment for their employees posed a challenge but was non-negotiable for me. Overcoming these hurdles required extensive research, collaboration, and dedication to our values. Ultimately, these efforts paid off, resulting in a product that reflects both quality and a commitment to making a positive impact.

13How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?

The awards and recognition I’ve received over the years have opened numerous doors for me, helping to further my career and connect with others in the industry. While fame may seem daunting to some, I don’t find it difficult.

The real reward comes from the recognition and respect I receive from the people I meet along the way. It’s incredibly satisfying to know that my work has made an impact, and the positive feedback from peers and collaborators is what truly motivates me to continue pushing the boundaries of design.

14What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?

One of my favorite things about the design industry is its constant evolution—there’s always something new to learn, from innovative materials to emerging technologies.

Secondly, I love the collaborative spirit of the industry; working with diverse professionals from different fields brings fresh perspectives and enriches creativity.

Finally, I appreciate the power of design to solve real-world problems and improve people’s lives, whether through functional products or inspiring aesthetics. The ability to combine creativity, practicality, and human impact makes design a unique and deeply rewarding industry to be a part of.

15What makes your country specifically, unique in the design industry?

Sweden's design industry stands out for its seamless blend of functionality, minimalism, and sustainability, deeply rooted in our cultural heritage. Swedish design emphasizes clean lines, simplicity, and practicality, often inspired by nature and the Nordic lifestyle.

The country’s commitment to environmental consciousness drives innovation, with designers prioritizing eco-friendly materials and sustainable practices. Additionally, Sweden’s focus on inclusivity ensures designs are user-friendly and accessible. The strong tradition of craftsmanship, paired with cutting-edge technology, creates a perfect balance of tradition and modernity.

Sweden’s global reputation for quality and timeless aesthetics continues to influence and shape the international design landscape.

16Where do you see the evolution of design industry going over the next 5-10 years?

Looking 10 years into the future, I believe design will continue to evolve in incredible ways, driven by technology and the need to address global challenges. We will see even more seamless integration of AI and machine learning in design processes, creating highly personalized and efficient products.

Sustainability will be a central focus, with design solutions addressing climate change and resource depletion. I also foresee environments becoming more interactive, with smart architecture that responds to human needs.

Ultimately, the future will hold designs that not only look beautiful but enhance quality of life and promote environmental well-being in ways we can only imagine today.

17If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring MUSE Design Awards submitter, what advice would you give them?

Young designers should never stop observing the world around them. Every detail can serve as inspiration, contributing to an ever-growing library of ideas. By consistently drawing from your surroundings and integrating those elements into your work, you’ll build a unique and evolving design language that sets you apart.

Embrace mistakes as learning opportunities and never accept limitations. Focus on continually refining your skills through experience, staying open to new ideas, and maintaining a mindset that challenges boundaries. Persistence and a willingness to learn are key to becoming a better designer.

18What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the design industry?

For anyone looking to improve their skills in the design industry, I recommend a combination of hands-on practice, continual learning, and staying inspired. Start with foundational books like The Design of Everyday Things by Don Norman to understand user-centric design.

Online platforms like Coursera, Domestika, and MasterClass offer great design courses. Learn essential tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, CAD software, or Sketch, depending on your field. Networking is crucial—attend design expos, workshops, and join online communities like Behance or Dribbble to share and gain feedback. Explore industry trends through resources like Dezeen and Design Milk.

Finally, keep practicing and don’t fear failure—it’s through mistakes that you refine your creativity and develop mastery over time.

19What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

I developed my skills as a designer through a combination of hands-on experience, constant curiosity, and learning from both successes and failures. Lacking formal education in design, I relied on my passion to explore new ideas, experiment with materials, and study the work of other designers. I’ve always believed in learning by doing, so I constantly challenged myself with diverse projects, from lighting to furniture to fashion.

Each experience taught me something valuable, and over time, my skills evolved. The key has been embracing mistakes as opportunities for growth and pushing myself to stay innovative, creative, and adaptable in every project.
