MingLun Tsai's evocative series, "Jigong," captures the vibrant and spiritually rich Temple fair activities in Weizinei, Dongshi Township, Chiayi. The photographs provide a vivid portrayal of the Jigong Society guiding the community in burning firecrackers and paper money, a traditional practice to pray for safety during the god's birthday temple fair.
The photographs depict Jigong, a revered figure in Chinese folk religion, exuding a carefree and joyous demeanour. He is commonly seen smiling in his tattered monastic robes adorned with patches of different colours and oversized bead necklaces. His right hand typically holds a bottle of wine, while his left hand fans the air with a traditional fan. His distinctive hat, emblazoned with the Chinese character "Fo" (佛), meaning "Buddha," completes his iconic appearance.
Jigong, a Chan Buddhist monk from the Southern Song dynasty, is a figure of paradoxes. Known for his supernatural powers, which he used to aid the poor and challenge injustice, Jigong was also famous for his eccentric behaviour. He frequently flouted Buddhist monastic rules by consuming alcohol and meat, actions that set him apart from typical monastic figures. Despite—or perhaps because of—his unconventional lifestyle, Jigong became a legend by the time of his death, firmly embedded in Chinese culture as a deity in Chinese folk religion.
MingLun Tsai's photographs not only capture the essence of Jigong's spirited character but also the deep-rooted cultural and religious practices associated with him. The images show Jigong surrounded by a flurry of activities, with firecrackers exploding and paper money burning, symbolising the community's prayers for safety and prosperity. The vibrant scenes are a testament to the enduring cultural significance of Jigong and the lively traditions that honour him.
