Interview with the 2019 MUSE Design Awards Winner -Zhang Haihua

1Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2019 MUSE Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

The project is located on the shore of Jinji Lake in Suzhou, China. It covers an area of 1,300 square meters. In the design, I used the Four Landscapes, a Nan Song Dynasty landscape painting by the painter Liu Songnian, as one of my inspirations. I want to realize the sense of sequence and classic elements in the traditional Chinese architectural space in the modern space.

This case is my reflection on the trend of modern development of Chinese traditional interior design in the past five years. It is a reflection on the integration of regional cultural lifestyle and international cultural lifestyle.

2What was the biggest challenge with this project?

Application of traditional Chinese classical space in contemporary Llifestyle and the integration of traditional Chinese classical space and Western modern furniture.

3How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?

Winning the MUSE Awards has greatly improved the visibility in the design industry, and more importantly, you can research and explore your own design thinking and design direction with more confidence.

4If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring MUSE Award submitter, what advice would you give them?

You will be an excellent designer in the future. To design with your significant creativity.

5What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

I have been thinking the relationship between human and society, and the relationship between human and architecture, so as to figure out the living space and lifestyle that suit the contemporary Chinese people, and in the same time, to make it international and fashionable.

6Do you have anything else you would like to add to the interview?

Special thanks to the event committee for giving me this honor. I hope that through my work, the world can more easily interpret the culture and stories of the East.
