Interview with the 2021 MUSE Design Awards Winner - Zhang Jin

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

Hi, my name is Zhang Jin and I am a brand and packaging designer. I created Sanbu Brand Design in 2020. My philosophy in this particular field are "emotional design" and "do less, more fine". I do not do more than ten works each year as I believe I will create finer designs with the method I have chosen.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?

I chose to be a designer due to my passion and abundant of love for designs.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

Sanbu Brand Design is a comprehensive brand design agency that provides customers with brand design and packaging design services. We focus on "creating designs that convey feelings". Other than valuing the beauty and the form of the exhibition, we also search for opportunities for the brands to grow via data analysis.

4What does “design” mean to you?

Beautiful and meaningful designs make our life better. It's a process of discovering beauty and creating beauty. I truly do enjoy it.

5What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

I like design works that are full of cultural elements and characteristics. For me, any design with cultural heritage will have the possibility of inheritance and a more enduring aftertaste.

6To you, what makes a “good” design?

If the design is not good enough, it requires an evaluation in a specific environment. The evaluation criteria will depend on the initial purpose when creating that design, whether to sell it or reflect the brand culture. But no matter what the situation is, a good design will always have a place in people's hearts.

7Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

I always explore the combination of brands and local cultures. If a brand wants to be unique, it needs to be full of local cultures. This will create a deeper memory of that specific environment for the people.

8Tell us about your design process.

Before designing, we need to have in-depth communication and understanding with the brand we are working on to understand the brand culture, product competitiveness, and local culture. These will be our creative source, and then I like to think quietly and finally produce the design ideas.

9Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?

The culture of a country and a place has a far-reaching influence on people. It also plays a decisive role in people's way of thinking and values. These two things will form personal aesthetics and will be brought into the design invisibly.

10Congratulations! As the winner of the 2021 MUSE Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?

It's a great honor to win the 2021 MUSE Design award. It's an encouragement for us to remind ourselves to maintain high professional standards. It also helps us gain higher professional trust from new customers.

11Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2021 MUSE Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

Two of our projects, entitled "Ying Hua Qing Su gift box" and "yellow crane tower craft beer" won the 2021 MUSE Design Awards. These two projects were based on Chinese traditional culture. "Ying Hua Qing Su gift box" uses the characters of the 1990s to express the brand precipitation. While "yellow crane tower craft beer" was based on the Chu culture in the book of changes and the Analects of Confucius. It's worth savoring.

12What was the biggest challenge with this project?

Chinese culture is extensive and profound. If we want to learn what we want from the vast culture, it requires a lot of reading and understanding, and plenty of time to consult materials, visit museums, and many more.
