Interview with the 2021 MUSE Design Awards Winner - Yu-Hsin Wang

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

I have been studying fashion design for five years. I decided to go to Italy to study my Master Degree last year, I deferred for a year because of COVID-19. Currently, I’m still learning new skill and find new ideas.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?

I tried a lot different things when I was a college student. I think becoming a designer is just another way to keep learning something that I love.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

I studied international trade when I was a senior high school student. I majored in art and design for two year, learning interior design and art. However, I realized I have a passion for fashion design. Finally, I transferred to the other school to study fashion and I experienced collaborating with brands in surface design. Next year, I will go to Italy to learn collection design.

4What does “design” mean to you?

Design is our life. Anything in our daily life was designed to create a better life.

5What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

I think this question is really hard to answer, because everyone has a different opinion. Actually, I like many designs, so I guess I just keep an open heart to appreciate everyone's work.

6To you, what makes a “good” design?

Design is actually very subjective. Generalized good or bad design may be judged by consumers or users. For me, a good design is to convey their own ideas, and insist on it not to follow the trend.

7Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

My design style was affected by different age or different time. I like diversified designs. I use designs to transport my own ideas or stories. Recently, I like to incorporate the elements of time into my series design, so I used many different elements and material in it. I hope that I can find different ways to convey my idea.

8Tell us about your design process.

Most of my ideas come from my life. If I’m interested in this topic, I would search some informations on internet. Before I draw a design diagram, l like to draw some illustration, because the process of drawing can inspire me.

9Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?

I think it has some influence, but the biggest influence comes from our partners, because there are many talented people in our country. Peer comparison can make us progress more.

10Congratulations! As the winner of the 2021 MUSE Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?

Actually I still a student, so getting this award is meaningful to me. I believe everyone must face failure on the way to achieve their dreams. This award gave me so much encouragement. Sometimes, I feel hesitation and fear, but I will work hard and try to be an excellent designer.

11Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2021 MUSE Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

This work is inspired by my dead father, who passed away five years ago. Actually, this is my graduation work, commemorating him. Last year, due to the COVID-19, my fashion show was forced to cancel. I think it is a pity, because this work means a lot to me. Finally I saw this competition on internet, and I decided to participate in this competition.

12What was the biggest challenge with this project?

The materials of pieces are different. I used diverse materials and elements to collage my dad’s face. My dad’s biggest feature is wearing glasses every time, so I selected glasses to connect different pieces. The text under the glasses can make up what I want to say to him. My theme is “different timing different missing”. Not only does it reveal the different points of time, but it also has to look like it came from the same idea.

13How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?

This gave me a lot of encouragement, especially because of the epidemic, many of my plans were destroyed. It also made me realize that I still need to learn many things, but I am progressing and being recognized.

14What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?

First of all, there are talented people that I can learn from them. Secondly, designers create something incredible to give us better life. Finally. this industry makes fills me with enthusiasm, because it would let me keep learning and want to become a designer who brings influence to others.

15What makes your country specifically, unique in the design industry?

In the fashion industry, I think our country is still in the developing stage. A lot of information and resources come from abroad. But in the past few years, we promoted our own fashion week, and I noticed that we have many original ideas, which are currently in the stage of implementation.

16Where do you see the evolution of design industry going over the next 5-10 years?

I believe that environmental protection is the most important issue. The Earth is seriously polluted. When we make our life better, we are also destroying the Earth at the same time. Striking a balance between the two sides is our most important issue.

17If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring MUSE Design Awards submitter, what advice would you give them?

In this industry we have to learn many things, at the same time also understanding that everyone has different aesthetics. There will be criticism in this industry. If you insist to be a designer, please strike your original idea, because I think this is the most precious thing in this industry.

18What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the design industry?

I think traveling inspires me a lot. Most of my friend they would say pinterest etc. Currently, most people can’t go to outside because the COVID-19. Maybe in this period, the Internet is convenient ,but I don’t subject to the reliance of it.

19Tell us something you have never told anyone else.

I often fantasize about many things which give me to have many interesting ideas.

20Who has inspired you in your life and why?

Everyone can inspire me. Not only my family and friends, but even a stranger. Life is full of surprises.

21What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

Don’t easily give up or be defeated. We definitely have to learn many skills. For example, I studied fashion for five years. Not only learning from form school, I also have to learn different languages or computer software. Maintaining a state of learning to accept anything new can overcome many difficulties and become a more professional person.

22Do you have anything else you would like to add to the interview?

Don't let others influence you easily. The greatest wealth is your imagination and original idea.
