Interview with the 2020 MUSE Design Awards Winner - Wen Ching Wu

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your background.

My professional journey in interior design started when I was young and was passionate about creating intuitive living space through organizing furniture at my old home. It eventually became an obsession and led me to study architecture to become an interior designer. In the 1980's, the industry in Taiwan didn’t recognize interior design as a career option, and the architecture curriculum at the National Taipei University of Technology didn’t suit my interest. At 20 years old, I entered the industry as an entry-level architecture drafter, and the rest is history.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?

The catalyst that inspired me to become a designer was a gorgeous image of a residential space published in a Japanese interior design magazine. The minimalistic style, paired with a well-organized layout, had my eyes opened. It also made me realized that this—designing beautiful and useful spaces—can be my career. As I have spent more time organizing each family home over the years, my motivation never shifts away from perfecting the balance between aesthetics and lifestyle for the users.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

LAVA Design is a design firm located in Hsinchu City, Taiwan. My responsibility includes communicating with every client, understanding their needs, discussing the potential of their future home, and develop an appropriate strategy. Because our firm is also specialized in designing residential, office, and commercial spaces, a large portion of my role also includes surprising and strategizing project directions

4What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

I really adore natural materials, especially the grains and the layers of any wood materials. Wood is a common material that features in most of the projects.

5To you, what makes a “good” design?

A “good” design should fulfill the client’s needs through understanding their lifestyle, while also leveraging their standard of life.

6Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

It is crucial to never repeat the same design and to always customize the elements based on every living space's characteristics.

7Tell us about your design process.

Although every project is different in their own way, our team usually goes through a three-step process—identifying a theme, matching materials, and then establishing the rest of the details.

8Congratulations! As the winner of the 2020 MUSE Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?

This winning award will continue to motivate our firm to continue striving for creativity and qualitative work. The recognition also will help to initiate future collaboration with potential clients.

9What was the biggest challenge with this project?

Bathing Light | Gold

The original floor plan of this site was a long rectangular public space. It was challenged to maintain the visual balance of the interior space while incorporating individual sections such as the L-shape study room, the living room, and the dining room.

Weaving Light | Silver

The building was a sale center of the newly built residential project. Since it is a temporary structure locating in the older section of Hsinchu City, we were challenged to develop an elegant solution that harmonize the interior and exterior design with the surrounding environment.

10What makes your country specifically, unique in the design industry?

The interior designers in Taiwan are passionate about developing their own personal taste, which has driven the industry to be competitive and creative.

11Where do you see the evolution of design industry going over the next 5-10 years?

As sustainability becomes not only a trend but a necessity in the contemporary world, green materials that decrease pollution and increase recyclability have become an interest for our firm to integrate into our work.

12What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

To be successful in life, we have to find where our passions are, and foster them to move forward.
