1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

I am Wei Pan, the founder of Ningbo Castle Mechanical Co., Ltd., with over ten years of experience in the mechanical components industry. My background spans designing and producing castings, stampings, machined parts, forgings, and die-castings, primarily for industries like automotive, construction machinery, marine, and hardware. My company collaborates with renowned global brands. I also hold a patent for a specialized chuck design used in CNC machines.

My design approach is rooted in practicality and innovation, combining mechanical efficiency with environmental sustainability. Recently, my product TitanFire, a component designed for environmental applications, received a Gold in MUSE. This recognition highlights my commitment to integrating innovative technology with real-world solutions that can positively impact the environment.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?

My journey as a designer began with a deep passion for problem-solving and a desire to create practical solutions that can make a difference. Growing up, I was always fascinated by how machines worked and how components fit together to create something bigger and more efficient. This led me to study mechanical engineering and eventually establish my own company, where I could merge my technical knowledge with creativity.

I chose to focus on mechanical design because it allows me to combine innovation with real-world applications. The ability to design something that not only functions efficiently but also has a positive environmental impact, like my TitanFire project, gives me a sense of purpose and fulfillment. For me, design is not just about aesthetics—it's about creating products that improve industries and contribute to a more sustainable future.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

I am the founder of Ningbo Castle Mechanical Co., Ltd., a company with over 20 years of history in producing high-quality mechanical components, such as castings, stampings, machined parts, forgings, and die-castings. Our products are used in a wide range of industries, including automotive, construction machinery, marine, and various hardware machinery sectors. We are IATF 16949 certified and have built long-term relationships with several world-renowned brands across the globe.

As the CEO and lead designer, my role involves overseeing the entire process—from concept development to final production. I am deeply involved in the design and innovation of new products, such as TitanFire, which recently won a Gold for its environmental applications. I also guide the strategic direction of the company, ensuring we stay at the forefront of technological advancements and maintain our commitment to quality and sustainability.

In addition to our core mechanical production, we are expanding our global reach by helping businesses grow through platforms like Amazon, Wayfair, and Walmart, especially in Southeast Asia. My focus is always on finding ways to innovate and deliver products that meet the evolving needs of our clients and the industries we serve.

4What does “design” mean to you?

To me, "design" is the perfect intersection of creativity, functionality, and problem-solving. It’s about understanding the needs of both the user and the environment, and then creating something that not only meets those needs but also exceeds expectations. Design goes beyond aesthetics—it’s about crafting solutions that are practical, efficient, and sustainable.

In my field of mechanical components, design means creating products that optimize performance while minimizing waste and environmental impact. It’s about precision and innovation, ensuring that every component serves its purpose in the most efficient way possible. With projects like TitanFire, I aim to push the boundaries of what’s possible in terms of combining cutting-edge technology with real-world applications that contribute to a better future.

5What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

My favorite kind of design is sustainable and innovative engineering, particularly in mechanical components. I’m drawn to designs that not only enhance functionality but also prioritize environmental responsibility. Projects like TitanFire exemplify this, as they combine advanced technology with eco-friendly practices.

I appreciate designs that challenge traditional methods and seek to reduce waste while improving efficiency. The beauty of this approach lies in its potential to create lasting impact, pushing industries toward a more sustainable future. It excites me to explore new materials and technologies that can revolutionize the way we think about mechanical design, ultimately benefiting both the user and the planet.

6To you, what makes a “good” design?

A "good" design, to me, is one that balances three key elements: functionality, innovation, and sustainability. First and foremost, it must serve its intended purpose effectively and efficiently, solving real-world problems. A design that works flawlessly and improves performance is a solid foundation.

But beyond functionality, a good design pushes the boundaries of innovation. It explores new ideas, materials, or processes that enhance the product or the user experience. It's about rethinking conventional approaches and finding creative solutions that set the design apart.

Lastly, sustainability is essential. A good design should minimize environmental impact, whether through energy efficiency, material choices, or durability. It’s about creating something that stands the test of time, both in terms of quality and its contribution to a greener future.

7Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

My design style is rooted in practicality and innovation, with a strong focus on precision and sustainability. As a mechanical designer, my primary goal is to create solutions that are efficient and highly functional while minimizing environmental impact.

The main characteristics of my design style include:

Functionality: Every component I design is optimized for performance and reliability. I prioritize how each piece works within a larger system, ensuring that the design enhances overall efficiency.

I often collaborate with engineers and other team members to ensure the prototype meets technical specifications.

Moreover, traditional Chinese philosophies, such as harmony with nature and sustainability, resonate deeply with my design ethos. I believe that good design should respect the environment and seek to minimize waste, reflecting the principles of balance and sustainability found in Chinese culture.

For me personally, this award represents a significant milestone in my journey as a designer. I chose to enter TitanFire into the awards because it embodies the principles I strive for in my work: practicality, innovation, and responsibility. The design focuses on optimizing performance while using eco-friendly materials and processes. By addressing critical environmental challenges, TitanFire not only enhances operational efficiency but also contributes positively to sustainability efforts within the industry.

12What was the biggest challenge with this project?

Sustainability! While I aimed to create a high-performance mechanical component, I was equally committed to using eco-friendly materials and processes. This required extensive research and experimentation to find the right combination of materials that could meet the rigorous demands of the application while also being environmentally responsible.

Additionally, I faced obstacles in sourcing sustainable materials that did not compromise the component’s functionality or durability. Collaborating with suppliers and conducting tests to ensure the materials could withstand the operational stresses was a complex and time-consuming process.

Another significant challenge was incorporating innovative technology into the design without increasing production costs. I needed to ensure that TitanFire could be manufactured efficiently while still delivering exceptional performance and sustainability benefits. This required close collaboration with my engineering team to optimize the design for both functionality and manufacturability.

Overcoming these challenges not only pushed me to think creatively but also reinforced my belief that the pursuit of sustainability can drive innovation in design. The experience ultimately led to a more refined product that exemplifies the values I hold dear in my work.

One thing I’ve never shared with anyone is that early in my career, I struggled with self-doubt about my design abilities. I remember a specific project where I felt overwhelmed and uncertain about my design choices. I feared that I wasn’t good enough compared to my peers, and I considered stepping back from the industry altogether.

However, instead of giving in to that doubt, I decided to push through and sought feedback from trusted colleagues. Their support and constructive criticism helped me grow and improve my skills. That experience taught me the importance of vulnerability, collaboration, and resilience in the design process. It’s a reminder that everyone faces challenges and doubts, but it’s how we respond to them that defines our journey.

20Who has inspired you in your life and why?

One of my greatest inspirations has been Steve Jobs. His vision and approach to design have profoundly influenced my career and philosophy. Jobs’ relentless pursuit of perfection and belief in the intersection of technology and artistry resonate with me. He emphasized the importance of user experience, which is a principle I strive to incorporate into my own work.

What inspires me most about Jobs is his ability to think differently and challenge the status quo. He didn’t just aim to create products; he aimed to create experiences that changed how people interact with technology. This mindset encourages me to push boundaries in my designs, focusing on innovation and sustainability while ensuring that the end user is at the heart of the process.
