Interview With The 2023 TITAN Property Awards Winner – Qiong Wang

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself, your background, and your job profile.

I am Wang Qiong, the founder of ID DESIGN from Shanghai, China. With over ten years of experience in the industry, I have worked on various types of spaces including hotels, commercial spaces, and residential spaces. My approach to design is to find a balance between rigor and freedom and to seek harmony between design and life.

2What is your role in the company?

My keen observational skills and strong desire to create beautiful spaces have led me to become a designer. I enjoy the sparks that come from emotional collisions, and I believe that design is a product of both rationality and emotion, allowing us to solve problems while also expressing cultural.

3Please tell us more about your company / organization.

ID DESIGN was founded in Shanghai, China in 2015, with interior design as its core focus. We provide integrated professional design services that include interior design, soft furnishing, environmental design, lighting design, visual merchandising, and intelligent design.

Our projects cover various types of spaces, including but not limited to commercial real estate, luxury villas, star-rated hotels, Grade A office buildings, and senior living spaces. We have formed strategic partnerships with numerous well-known listed real estate companies, and our design works have won many important awards both domestically and internationally.

4Congratulations! As the winner of the 2023 TITAN Property Awards, what does it mean for you, your team, and your organization, to receive this distinction?

Design is the art of solving problems in a beautiful way, and it is a means of making life more beautiful.

5Could you briefly explain about the winning project / title you entered into the 2023 TITAN Property Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

Modern design that incorporates cultural experiences easily impresses me. The cultural spirit conveyed through concise design language is even more powerful.

6What were the biggest challenges you faced with this project?

My design philosophy focuses on meeting the needs of both the client and the space, achieving an organic integration of functionality and form and delivering an aesthetic experience that is sustainable and environmentally friendly.

7For Property Developer, Architect and Designer, what makes a “good” property design?

Solving difficult problems, creating highlights, and designing beyond the client's expectations.

Continuously communicating with the client to solve practical problems and ensuring rigorous implementation.

Conducting project retrospectives, reflecting on the design process, and consolidating knowledge for future projects.

8Describe your property design style and its main characteristics.

Chinese culture is vast and profound, and the natural scenery is picturesque. With rapid economic development, it has had a profound impact on both the physical and spiritual aspects of people's lives. The emotional color of the group is warm and strong, while the individual spirit pursues transcendental tranquility. The diverse and colorful social forms provide my projects with more possibilities, and there are more rich design languages to draw from.

9What made you / Why did you choose to become an artist / designer / real estate agent / property developer?

It is a great honor for me on winning the gold award at the 2023 TITAN awards! This is a great recognition of the ID DESIGN team's hard work, our design concepts and working methods. This award encourages us to continue to innovate and challenge ourselves in our design journey.

10What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

This project draws inspiration from naturalism and embodies the free, romantic and vibrant architectural style of the Mediterranean coast. It applies classical modular proportions, natural materials, and changing light and shadow to create a cultural complex that integrates functions such as sales reception, private communication, and social leisure.

It showcases a diverse range of appearances and uses, and aims to achieve sustainable development goals. The lighting is ingeniously used to create a varied atmosphere, allowing the space to transform between a daytime seaside resort and a nighttime underwater adventure, providing an immersive experience.

I chose this project to compete because of its design simplicity and use of negative space, as well as the integration of function and form to achieve environmental sustainability while addressing the client's needs. The project creates a natural and comfortable aesthetic experience.

11What led you / your organization to become successful within the industry you are currently in?

The major challenge of this design is how to emphasize the impact of the changing light on the interior scene, given the white glass-box structure of the space. Additionally, providing diverse interactive experiences is also one of the core objectives of this design.

12Do you think your country and its cultural heritage had an impact on your design process?

Engage with interesting people and things.

Study the design differences in different cultural aesthetics from various countries.

Enjoy various aesthetic spaces.

Learn from nature.

13How has the country, you are based in, helped move your industry forward?

The aesthetic tension created by combining traditional Chinese culture with modern techniques, as well as the innovation of incorporating intangible cultural heritage crafts, produces a unique charm.

14For Real Estate Agent, what does “real estate” mean to you?

Environmental sustainability, innovative modes of participation, and interactive experiences blending the virtual and real worlds.

15Where do you see the evolution of the real estate industry in the next 5-10 years?

Keeping up with the latest AI technologies of our time and studying traditional culture.

16Who has inspired you in your life, and why?

Traveling and chatting with friends inspire me.

The natural scenery and cultural architecture during travel are an endless source of inspiration.

Conversations with friends bring new ways of thinking.

17What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

Effective communication, attention to detail, persistence in innovation, and opportunities brought by luck.
