Interview with the 2021 MUSE Design Awards Winner - Wang Chen

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

My name is Wang Chen. I'm from Suzhou, China. I have been in the interior design industry for 8 years now.

2Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

My company name is New Concept Decoration. We focus on the innovative design of commercial space and serve customers from all over the country. In commercial design, they had lots of restaurant design experience. We believe that the right or suitable design can efficiently contribute to the restaurant's operation strategy. Design is not only an art, it also creates other value for interior space.

3What does “design” mean to you?

In my opinion, design is about solving the problems of a space in an artistic way. These problems may either be a defect or an extension of a function.

4To you, what makes a “good” design?

A good design is not only for art purposes, it also need to create other values for interior spaces. It should solve problems.

5Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

Back then, I have made several Chinese designs for Chinese restaurants. In recent years, I have managed to simplify the Chinese style and added modern elements, new materials, and new technologies in my creation.

6Tell us about your design process.

The usual design processes are planning layout design, designing space effect, constructing the drawings and site services. Before designing each space, we will communicate with the owners clearly, survey the site carefully, and analyze the owner's competitors.

7Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?

China has a long history, vast territory, various architectures, and humanities. Historically, Chinese culture has also influenced the neighboring countries. In Suzhou where I live, the cultural history and heritage are very profound. Through Chinese design, there are many things that we can discover and explore.

8Congratulations! As the winner of the 2021 MUSE Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?

Winning the MUSE Design Award is a great encouragement for the team and I. We will continue to work hard to make better designs in the future.

9Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2021 MUSE Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

This project is such an amazing project. While designing, we have to make sure we fulfill the needs of Party A and create new species at the same time. We abandoned the lattice with a modular baffle at the end of the 1980s to create a new garden office social mode. With the development of science and technology, the office mode is constantly changing, and the immersive experience and flexible scenes are more in line with the new office mode.

10What was the biggest challenge with this project?

The biggest challenge of this project is to persuade the owner to abandon his inherent thinking, and adopt our design concept and scheme.

11How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?

I think the award is not only an affirmation for myself and the team, but it is also an opportunity to learn from fellow designers.

12What makes your country specifically, unique in the design industry?

I think although the Chinese design industry started very late, it managed to develop rapidly in the recent years. We do not only have local characteristics, but we are also able to integrate western design ideas in our architecture.

13Where do you see the evolution of design industry going over the next 5-10 years?

In the future, the design industry will be more subdivided, and designers will focus more on a specific design field. At the same time, technology will change our design habits, design methods, and design styles.

14Who has inspired you in your life and why?

In my life, I have got good inspiration from movies, books, and communication.

15What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

I think designers should keep on learning as it is the key to success.
