Interview with the 2020 MUSE Design Awards Winner - Song Xia

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

My name is Song Xia, the founder and brand director of Qingyu Design. I graduated from Sichuan Conservatory of Music ChengDu Academy of Fine Arts. I have been engaged in interior design for 15 years. I founded an independent design studio in 2011 and officially founded Qingyu design in 2014. Since then, with the ‘double high’ (high production and high quality) of my works, I have rapidly grown into one of the representatives of famous young designers in China, and have been invited by various high-end industry forums and academic activities.

In recent years, the works completed by the team are not only frequently included in major professional decoration design websites and mainstream website media, but also stand out in the major professional design awards every year.

Our works have been included in many professional books and high-end fashion home magazines, such as "ELLE DECORATION", "TRENDS HOME ", "MODERN DECORATION", "RAYLI HOME", "PC house", "ENJOY YOUR TIME AR HOME THE INTOXICATIONG NORDIC STYLE", "SMALL MODEL LARGE PATTERN MODREN AMERICAN STYLE", "HANDBOOK OF SMALL SPACE DESIGN", "KEY POINTS OF PARTITION DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION", "CLOTH DESIGN AND COLLOCATION", etc.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?

Because of my major and also it’s my deal to be an interior designer.

3What does “design” mean to you?

It means luck. For that it is not only my way of survival, but also my love. Many times, it has become a way for me to communicate with the world.

4What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

Natural and comfortable designs without looking heavy.

5To you, what makes a “good” design?

Respecting business and clients’ demands. With good experience and careful reading of the space, you will find appreciation and good inspiration.

6Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

We don't have a fixed design style. We find a balanced design between the customer's purse, aesthetic feeling, function, and practicality.

7Tell us about your design process.

More communication, more understanding, more reading, more learning and step by step designs.

8Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?

I came from China, an ancient cultural country with a history of 5000 years. For example, when using colors, we prefer colors with grayscale to make them look more texture, like the color of Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, which also has a great impact on us.

9Congratulations! As the winner of the 2020 MUSE Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?

It means encouragement and recognition. After years of working, we are very excited to win this award.

10Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2020 MUSE Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

"It Was My Great Pleasure To Meet You" is a 390 square meter villa with 5 rooms, a living room a kitchen and a garden, which is located in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China. It took us three years to build it. For our team and also our client, it is a very long-term project. In fact, both sides were very satisfied with the final achievements. We hope to share it with you. We also hope to create opportunities for us to communicate with international designers by participating in the competition.

11What was the biggest challenge with this project?

It took a long time to build the project and control the budget, alongside the lengthy talks with the estate management.

12What are your top three (3) favorite things about the industry?

Beauty, creativity, every project is a challenge, and it's exciting.

13What makes your country specifically unique in the design industry?

Tolerant, self-motivated, eager to learn, and the acceptance of other ideas.

14Where do you see the evolution of design industry going over the next 5-10 years?

I think that the design industry will continue to improve in the next 5-10 years. The design industry is a sunshine industry. As the post-80s becoming main consumer group, their understanding of interior design far exceeds that of 60, 70. They are willing to spend more on design and improve their living environment.

15 If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring MUSE Design Awards submitter, what advice would you give them?

Down to earth, strive to forge ahead, see more and learn more.

16What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the design industry?

There are many places that can provide excellent cases and professional learning, but for designers, it may be more necessary to go out for a walk, study tour and broaden their horizons, which will give you different visual impact and inspiration.

17Who has inspired you in your life and why?

Because I am a designer, I have an eye to find beauty and my own cognition of beauty.

18What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

It's not a success at the moment. We'll make more effort.
