Interview with the 2021 LIT Talent Awards Winner - Reiko Nomura

1Please provide us with a brief bio of yourself and your background.

Hi! I’m Reiko Nomura. I am a Composer, Film Composer, and Pianist, born and raised in Tokyo, Japan.

I have composed many songs, including Japanese horror film music, game music, etc. I have performed in so many places around the world too, including Suntory Hall (Tokyo, Japan), Mozarteum concert hall (Salzburg, Austria), the Host band of 2nd.st Jazz club, Orchid festival (Los Angels, USA), and many more. Other than being a perfomer, I'm teaching piano, DAW, compose.

Currently, I am attending a Master of Fine Art program at Film Scoring Academy of Europe as I won The Jan Kaczmarek Scholarship.

2What led you to become a talent/artist/influencer/performer?

I'm not good at doing just one thing. I do not only studied classic organ, jazz piano, conduct, orchestration, and film scoring but also art therapy, psychology, and web design. As a result, it led to my borderless musical work. My job encompasses various genres, such as a pianist, composer, conductor, instructor, etc.

When I was a kid, I thought it was bad that I could not focus on one thing. But now, I'm proud of myself as I am now a multi-talented person.

3What is your own definition of an impressive performance/show/masterpiece?

Creative, Beautiful, Unique, and Powerful, but minimal and simple.

4What is your creative or ideation process like?

If I come across something from the outside, such as climate change, discrimination, losing loved ones, or any situation where I feel that I can't help myself, I have the urge to express those feelings. Other than that, the ideation also come when I am doing psychoanalysis or meditation.

Actually, it’s easy to express my thoughts in words as it’s quick and convenient. However, looking from the art perspective, words also have various problems too. With that, I feel like not everything can be expressed through words nor attitudes. Hence, I make music instrumental. That is how I express my feelings.

The composition process is just to compose your feeling in front of the piano and as soon as I get the rhymes, I will use DAW to analyze the notes.

5What has been the best performance of your career so far?

I don’t have the best performance yet. and I am looking forward to it!

6Congratulations! As the winner of LIT Talent Awards, what does it mean to you, or your team, to receive this honor?

I think "being talented" is a very important skill for performers, composers and musicians.

I felt overwhelmed and very honored receiving this award.

7How has winning an international awards help promote you and/or your masterpiece?

Winning an International Awards are very important to me because it could help to spread awareness and at the same time making Japanese music industry known worldwide as I think Japanese artists and Japanese music are still very uncommon in the industry.

Other than that, I also received some messages and offers from various people. With this, I feel like it is a good chance to let them know about my music and other Japanese musician.

8What are the challenges, for your winning entry, that you faced?

One of the challenges that I faced is, I don’t have pictures or videos of myself for me to publish them because as a composer or instructor, I mostly work behind the scenes.

But, worry no more! I went to a professional photography studio and shoot a few pictures of myself. It was challenging but I had a lot of fun!

9What advise you will give to those who are in the same industry and/or are interested with your craft?

Always do self-analysis. It is the most important thing to do in music.

10Who inspired you in your life, and why?

Me. I have been doing self-reflecting and analyzing myself for many years. Sometimes I’ll do it with my counselor and therapist, and sometimes when I was meditating. I still have a lot to learn about myself and I’m willing to do that.

11Who do you admire and what did he/she do that motivated you?

My husband. I am so lucky to be blessed with such a great husband who is also a musician. He is a composer and a pianist, and just like me, he is also a music teacher. My husband and I organize various music classes, live concerts, jam sessions, film music and many more. We continue to impress each other with great things and we also admire each other so dearly.

12Who would you most like to collaborate with?

Anything interesting. I love interesting things!

13What is the key that made you succeed? Any parting words of wisdom?

I don’t think I'm successful yet. However, I will never stop evolving. I dream for success everyday, and with the efforts I have made and will continue to make, I hope to become a successful musician one day!

14What is your upcoming masterpiece, that you’re currently preparing, about?

This award-winning song entitled "Humanity" is a suite and has 3 songs. I have released 2 songs and the other one will be releasing soon and with that, this suite will come to an end soon.

My upcoming masterpiece is a big orchestra with a choir song. However, due to pandemic, I was unable to record the choir parts. Hopefully I will get to record the as soon as covid ends.

15If you could change anything about the entire industry, what would it be?

I have attended many #metoo #withyou demonstrations. Thus, I want to change the gender gap and create gender diversity in music industry.

16Do you have anything else you would like to add for the interview?

I would like to say thank you to orchestra musicians, conductor, recording engineers, preparing score and parts sheets volunteers, camera crew, and the supervisor. I only composed, but with your help, I managed to win this award. So, thank you for the bottom of my heart.
