Hi, my name is Lynn, and I'm from the heart of Europe—Luxembourg. I'm an amateur photographer with a deep passion for Indonesia, a country that has profoundly influenced my work. My photography style is characterised by bold and colourful images that aim to capture the vibrant essence of the world around me.
I first picked up a camera about 10 years ago, but after taking a long break, I rediscovered my love for photography around 7 years ago. Initially, I focused on landscape photography, drawn to the beauty of natural scenes. However, as I began traveling through Indonesia, I fell in love with portrait photography. The people I met and their rich cultural heritage inspired me to shift my focus and explore the stories that can be told through capturing faces and emotions.
My hope is to explore as many places in Indonesia as possible, immersing myself in its rich diversity. There's so much to discover—countless customs to witness, fascinating people to meet, and untold stories waiting to be heard.
Through my photography, I aim to capture these experiences and encounters in a way that resonates with others. If my photos can touch even one or two people, inspiring them to see the beauty and depth of Indonesia as I do, then I’ll consider my journey a success.
Winning the European Photography Awards is an incredible honour for me. It's a moment of immense happiness and pride but at the same time, I feel deeply humbled by this recognition, knowing that there are so many talented photographers across Europe who inspire and challenge us.
This award also brings a sense of hope. For someone like me, who struggles with imposter syndrome, this recognition serves as a reminder that my work has value and resonates with others. It encourages me to keep pushing boundaries and to trust in the creative vision I bring to life. I hope that this award will not only affirm my past efforts but also open new doors for future opportunities and collaborations
The winning works I entered into the 2024 European Photography Awards are part of an ongoing project titled 'Faces and Places of Indonesia.' This series is deeply personal to me, as it reflects my love and admiration for Indonesia, particularly Bali, and its rich tapestry of cultures and people.
Ever since I first visited Indonesia, I felt an immediate connection, almost as if I had found a second home. The warmth of the people and their deep dedication to their cultural and religious practices left a lasting impression on me. This project is a tribute to the individuals I've met and the vibrant diversity that defines Indonesia. Through my lens, I aimed to capture the essence of their daily lives, their rituals, and the stunning landscapes that are intertwined with their identities.
I chose to enter this project because it represents a journey of discovery, not just of a place, but of a deeper understanding of humanity through the stories of those who live there. I wanted to share this connection with others and celebrate the beauty and resilience of the Indonesian people.
The term success is incredibly vague to me. I am not sure I am having much success (yet?) but I feel very successful in that I follow my dream of photographing many different Indonesian people and their culture(s) and religion(s). The key to my success would be showing up with an open heart and open mind. And speaking pieces of Bahasa Indonesia certainly helps a lot too!
The success is validated by the many roads I get to take on this journey and the many wonderful moments I get to spend with strangers who quickly become new friends.
I stay receptive to new information and knowledge by nurturing a constant sense of curiosity. A lot of curiosity! I’m always eager to learn, whether it’s through reading, traveling, or simply engaging with people from different backgrounds. These experiences expose me to new ideas and perspectives that I might not encounter otherwise.
I also make it a point to challenge my own assumptions and remain open to change. By acknowledging that there’s always more to learn, I stay humble and ready to grow. This mindset helps me continuously evolve, both personally and professionally.
