Interview with the 2020 MUSE Design Awards Winner - Luo Ji Fa

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

I have been in the industry for nearly 20 years. My major is architecture and I have been responsible for various types of real estate projects, including: urban complex, commercial complex, logistics industrial park, scientific research industrial park, financial industry parks, cultural and tourism industrial parks, automobile industrial parks, packaging industrial parks and five-star hotels, shopping centers, commercial blocks, etc.

Now,I am committed to commercial real estate and industrial real estate planning, architecture, interior, landscape and other market thinking creative design, and new products to study.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?

There is a certain degree of coincidence to becoming a professional designer, because becoming a designer was not my initial dream. But when I studied design and engaged in the profession, I discovered that I enjoyed the design process. I found that I love this industry more and more after solving problems for many clients and winning their respect and praise. My mother always said,"You liked to write and draw when you were young, and now it seems that this choice of letting you learn design is correct."

3 Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

Shenzhen Bell Commercial Space Design Co., Ltd is a design studio listed the Grandland Group, the creative team has more than a dozen people, and the deepening team has a few people. We carry out different divisions of labor and cooperation. Our company consists of mainly young designers with a good spirit in innovation, collaboration, and spirit. I lead this team and can flexibly handle various hotel, office and complex projects.

4What does “design” mean to you?

The design is derived from the perception and understanding of life, creating a holographic art life, focusing on practicality, and absorbing the experience of life and beauty.

5What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

Pay attention to practicality, solve practical problems, and learn the experience of life and beauty.

6To you, what makes a “good” design?

A good design is suitable for the owner's positioning and use of functions , but it is not enough. It is best to be sustainable, be environmentally friendly, and have a global vision. Designers are the people who change the living environment and have this responsibility.

7Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

My design usually has a lot of large-scale projects. The style is simple and bright. I don't like stacking. I grasp the core elements of the space and run them uniformly to achieve a harmonious and atmospheric effect.

8Tell us about your design process.

Because the project I design is relatively large, I am used to starting with architectural analysis, analyzing the various logical, dynamic and static relationships in it, and finally the spatial and non-spatial relationships to complete the design process.

9Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?

All artistic creations are flowers rooted in the soil of the mother's culture. Being a designer is no exception. Although we are studying Western design methodology, we feel the influence of traditional culture all the time during the creation process. For example, I used water elements for the Zhuhai Yunzhou Unmanned Ship Headquarters Base project.

On the one hand, it is because boats are naturally closely related to water, and on the other hand, because I am considering the view in Lao Tzu's "Tao Te Ching": Water is like Infinity, it gives itself to all things without distinction or judgment and settles into the lowest places without deliberation. It expresses the humble, sincere, and flexible philosophy of the Chinese people.

10Congratulations! As the winner of the 2020 MUSE Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?

Winning the MUSE Gold Winner means professional affirmation for our company and team, which adds honor and motivation to our team, and encourages us to continue to work hard and make more exciting design works.

11What was the biggest challenge with this project?

The biggest challenge is: complex building structure and multi-functional requirements. The building adopts a double aircraft carrier shape and a Y-shaped structure. Each floor uses a different modulus, which is extremely complicated. The owner has various functional requirements, and different functions have different requirements for style to suit their demands.

There were two contradictions, but in the end, we adopted a lot of streamline and heterogeneity in the design, using anodized aluminum plate and GRG, which perfectly solved this problem, and achieved both excellent styling function and good color performance.

12How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?

I will maintain my passion for design and try to do more good projects and works.

13What makes your country specifically, unique in the design industry?

The first is the development of China's economy. The building decoration industry is booming, and we have many project opportunities. The second is the learning and innovation ability of Chinese designers.

14 Where do you see the evolution of design industry going over the next 5-10 years?

I think the gap between China's design level and the international level is getting smaller and smaller in the next 5-10 years. China's design industry will also become more mature. Our intelligence and standardization will be raised a level.

15If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring MUSE Design Awards submitter, what advice would you give them?

Just do it! Try to apply for it, because no matter if you win the award, you can learn a lot from it.

16What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the design industry?

Read more, learn more and do more. Dare to apply for awards, and find their strengths and weaknesses from their perspectives through comparison with peers and comments from judges.

17Tell us something you have never told anyone else.

I have a little secret. I have never applied for an international awards competition before. I tried muse for the first time and won the gold winner of Muse Award this time. It is a secret and a surprise.

18Who has inspired you in your life and why?

I often say that design comes from the perception and understanding of life. My children give me inspiration in life. Whenever I see their children's drawings, I always realize that design is everywhere and so pure.
