1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.
Hi there! I’m Junling, a design technologist and researcher based in New York, passionate about exploring the intersection of design, technology, and user experience. I’m all about fast-paced, hands-on prototyping and experimenting with the latest tech to turn ideas into experiences that connect with people in meaningful ways.
With a background in UX, data-driven design, computer science, and engineering, I love finding ways to bring spatial design and human-computer interaction together, creating what I like to think of as a new kind of digital media infrastructure.
2What made you become/why did you choose to become a digital designer/artist?
My architectural design background from undergraduate studies has deeply influenced my perspective on social structures. I aim to leverage my design and technical skills to positively impact people's lives.
3Tell us more about your business / company, job profile, and what you do.
As a design researcher for a company, I supported and facilitated research by conducting user studies and interviews, creating surveys, compiling secondary research, analyzing and organizing user data, and archiving research efforts. I used data-driven insights to develop innovative design solutions, software tool prototypes, and proofs of concept that addressed user needs and integrated design principles and skills.
4What’s your favorite kind of digital design and why?
I'm particularly drawn to data visualization and interface design. These fields essentially capture microcosms of human and social activities. Through this type of design, we can help audiences gain deeper insights from complex and abstract information, making it more accessible and understandable.
5To you, what makes a “good” design?
Design encompasses a vast spectrum. Beyond the familiar realms of interface and graphic design, social design and human-centered approaches are equally crucial. A truly good design, in my view, resonates with people much like a masterpiece of art does.
6Describe your design style and its main characteristics.
My designs blend emerging technologies with user experience. I believe design and technology aren't separate entities, but rather a symbiotic community that enhances each other.
7What current trends in digital design (or really anything digital related) are you most excited about?
I'm excited about the integration of AI in vertical products. Its impact on user experience is transformative, streamlining the end-to-end process and introducing numerous innovative interaction modes.
8Congratulations! As the winner of the 2024 Vega Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?
This recognition of my past efforts serves as a powerful motivator, inspiring me to push further in my chosen career path. Thank you for it!
9What are your top three (3) favorite things about the digital industry?
Experiencing design, storytelling, and the emerging technology.
10Where do you see the evolution of digital industry going over the next 5-10 years?
I believe design will evolve to encompass a wider range of specialized and diverse disciplines.
11If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring Vega Award submitter, what advice would you give them?
Don't hesitate to share your ideas with others, even if they're in their early stages.
12Who has inspired you in your life and why?
Rem Koolhaas, a master of architectural design who seamlessly blends theory and practice, has deepened my understanding of social structures' complexity.
13What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?
Stay curious and be agile in designing.
