Junling Zhuang

Junling Zhuang is a New York-based design technologist and researcher with expertise in user experience design, data-driven design, computer science, and engineering. His innovative work blends spatial design with human-computer interaction, envisioning these fields as a new digital media infrastructure, driven by rapid prototyping and cutting-edge technologies.

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your background.
Hi, I'm Junling, a design technologist and researcher based in New York. My multidisciplinary background includes user experience design, data-driven design, computer science, and engineering, allowing me to merge spatial design and human-computer interaction into a unique form of digital media infrastructure. I focus on rapid iterative design prototyping and the integration of emerging technologies to drive my work forward.
2What inspired you to be involved in your respective industry?
My architectural design background from undergraduate studies has deeply influenced my perspective on social structures. I aim to leverage my design and technical skills to positively impact people's lives.
3What is your role in the agency, and what traits should a professional in marketing, media and communications possess to be successful in their role?

As a design researcher for a company, I supported and facilitated research by conducting user studies and interviews, creating surveys, compiling secondary research, analyzing and organizing user data, and archiving research efforts.

I used data-driven insights to develop innovative design solutions, software tool prototypes, and proofs of concept that addressed user needs and integrated design principles and skills.

4What do you think is the definition of a successful marketing, media or communications project / presentation?
Design encompasses a vast spectrum. Beyond the familiar realms of interface and graphic design, social design and human-centered approaches are equally crucial. A truly successful design, in my view, resonates with people much like a masterpiece of art does.
5Describe your preference or style of work and how it benefits your career.
My designs blend emerging technologies with user experience. I believe design and technology aren't separate entities, but rather a symbiotic community that enhances each other.
6Congratulations! As the winner of the NYX Awards, what does it mean for you and your team to receive this distinction?
This recognition of my past efforts serves as a powerful motivator, inspiring me to push further in my chosen career path.
7What are the current trends in the marketing, media and communications industries that you are most excited about?
I'm excited about the integration of AI in vertical products. Its impact on user experience is transformative, streamlining the end-to-end process and introducing numerous innovative interaction modes.
8What are your top three (3) favorite things about the marketing, media or communications industries?
Experiencing design, storytelling, and emerging technology.
9What resources would you recommend to someone who is searching to improve their ideas and concepts?
Get inspiration from NYX Award winners' projects and related HCI Conference papers!
10Where do you see the evolution of these industries in the next 5-10 years?
I believe design will evolve to encompass a wider range of specialized and diverse disciplines.
11Who inspired you in your life, and why?
Rem Koolhaas, a master of architectural design who seamlessly blends theory and practice, has deepened my understanding of social structures' complexity.
12What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?
Stay curious and agile while designing.
