1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your background.

Jiaru Lin is a packaging designer based in New York. Originally from Taiwan, she later came to New York City to obtain her Master's degree in Communications/Packaging Design at Pratt Institute. Besides working on packaging design project, Jiaru have done a diverse range of work including: fine arts, jewelry design, graphic design, digital design, and teaching.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?

It makes me happy.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

I do a lot of art directions and packaging designs.

4What does “design” mean to you?

Solving problems in a beautiful way.

5What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

I like designs that have personal taste and philosophy.

6To you, what makes a “good” design?

To be very picky.

7Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

My design style is minimal and conceptional.

8Tell us about your design process.

I like to brainstorm on my own before researching, then researching, sketching, and executing designs.

9Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?

Yes. I am from Taiwan and have been living in the USA. The Taiwanese culture has made me value sustainable design more, and American culture made my design more bold, expressive, and diverse.

10Congratulations! As the winner of the 2020 MUSE Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?

11Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2020 MUSE Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

D’ONE is a small but exquisite packaging design for donut. The concept is to enhance the experience of eating donut, solving flavor mixed problems in traditional snack bag or box packaging. I entered this project because I was proud of the packaging design, it not only served fuctionality but also had a surprising element in it.

12What was the biggest challenge with this project?

To create a unique dieline to the packaging structure.

13What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?

1. Packaging design is both graphic and 3D designs.

2. I love the creation process.

3. The direct engagement with consumers.

14What makes your country specifically, unique in the design industry?

Its diversity.

15Where do you see the evolution of design industry going over the next 5-10 years?

I believe the packaging design industry will be more eco-friendly.

16If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring MUSE Design Awards submitter, what advice would you give them?

Be creative and do not worry to make mistakes.

17What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the design industry?

Everything in the world. Do not limit yourself only in art and design resources.

18Tell us something you have never told anyone else.

My third favorite color is yellow.

19Who has inspired you in your life and why?

My parents and loved ones. I received a lot of love from them, and they inspired me, and they made me very grateful in life.

20What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

There is no key to success. Success should be defined by yourself only.
