Interview with the 2020 MUSE Design Awards Winner - Jason Chan

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

I graduated with a major in Fashion Design in 2008. A cross-border designer actually and professional commercial space and architectural design for 11 years.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?

I can get a sense of achievement from my design.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do

We are the representatives of cross-cutting visual marketing in the industry, a serious space design company with a "serious" boss and a group of "serious" employees.

We are a Shanghai old-style house with unrestrained foreign styles and depth, creating serious designs, and then serious nonsense!

We attach importance to human factors and social culture, daring to deny and getting rid of traditional and thinking stereotypes, thus keeping pace with the times. We actively innovate and pay equal attention to both theory and practice. Design is not only the reference of design technique and theory, but also in the way of thinking.

4What does “design” mean to you?

Actually, It means a lot. Such as 'change', 'innovation', 'tool for livelihood', and 'solving problems'.

5What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

There is no best, but only suitable designs.

6To you, what makes a “good” design?

All the nice design should have commercial space design that is forward-looking and in line with commercial purposes.

7Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

There is no fixed style and characteristics. Different commercial formats should designed in different minds. If you are talking about features, I’d like to use installation art to achieve an eye-catching effect.

8Tell us about your design process.

Normally we do the brain storm with the partners so as to find out the difference, and we get to start.

9Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?

There would be some but very little.

10Congratulations! As the winner of the 2020 MUSE Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?

It means the recognition of my team.

11Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2020 MUSE Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

The two works selected for MUSE Design Awards are the two latest ones we've done in 2020. In these two projects, the team has paid a lot of time and energy to have some new attempts in designing. For ourselves, the result is quite satisfactory.

12What was the biggest challenge with this project?

We met more challenges on ZhuQue because the height of the whole house is relatively low, and it's also a brand-new upgraded brand as the building is restrictive on design.

13How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?

It has no practical effect, but it also can motivate the team well, and is also the recognition of our 2020 year.

14What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?

1. You can get a sense of accomplishment.

2. It will have a certain influence in the industry.

3. It can reflect the value of myself and my team.

15What makes your country specifically, unique in the creative industry?

Of course, competition is everywhere in the global design market and it is also a good thing. In China's design industry, clients prefer the designs of foreign countries. But in reality, you will find out that here are many Chinese designers are not inferior to foreign designers at all. Whether it is the realization of core competitiveness or commercial value, in essence, they are designers who can truly create value. Only those who are recognized by the C-end market can truly stand out and stand at the top of the pyramid.

16Where do you see the evolution of design industry going over the next 5-10 years?

At the present speed of development, I cannot imagine the next 5 to 10 years. With the development of the times, digital things occupy more and more work and life, and the younger designers could get more information off the Internet, which means more foresight for the industry.

17If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring MUSE Design Awards submitter, what advice would you give them?

Now there has higher requirements for designers. You should not only understand Party A, but also understand the market. Only when the design and C-end consumers have a real chemical reaction, that should be an excellent designer. So take every project seriously and do what you should do in your own professional field. Don't blindly be led by the nose by Party A.

18Who has inspired you in your life and why?

My inspiration is not inspired by someone. It depends on the present.

19What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

Honestly, I don't feel very successful. Just like what I said, I am still learning and keeping on.

20Do you have anything else you would like to add to the interview?

As a non-professional interior designer, I have experienced a lot of interesting things in my years of working experience. And now, in addition to my own work, I chose to pick up clothing design again. I also want to integrate some interior and architectural elements to enrich the clothing design. I think there is something in common between the two industries. At least aesthetically-wise! I would like to look at the industry itself from a different angle. I also believe that there will be a different spark in my work!
