1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.
We are HumbleStone Design. We are a team with a passion for interior design and architecture. Our inspiration is to make the world more beautiful through our designs while meeting our clients' needs for storage solutions, furniture arrangements, decor, and smart home integration.
2What made you become/why did you choose to become an architectural / interior designer?

Lin Chia Ying: My decision to become an interior designer was fueled by a lifelong passion for creating beautiful and functional spaces. From a young age, I was fascinated by how different elements within a room could come together to create a cohesive and inviting environment. This curiosity led me to study design and architecture, where I discovered the profound impact thoughtful design can have on people's lives. I chose this path to merge my creative instincts with my desire to improve the way people live and interact within their spaces. It's incredibly fulfilling to transform a vision into reality and see the joy it brings to clients.

Yeh Yu: My love for drawing and space design led me to choose a design program during my studies. Through design, I can address people's needs for space utilization in their daily lives. Collaborating with clients to bring their dream spaces to life is the driving force behind my decision to become an interior designer.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.
Our company is made up of designers who hold professional licenses in interior design and engineering. We have an in-house engineering team that can tackle a wide range of construction issues. We offer expert planning and resources in design, construction, and interior decor.
4What does “design” mean to you?
To us, design is the art of creating spaces that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. It goes beyond mere decoration; it’s about solving problems, enhancing lifestyles, and transforming environments. Design is a way to bring imagination to life, blending creativity with practicality to meet the unique needs of each client. It’s about making a lasting impact on people's daily experiences through thoughtful and innovative solutions.
5What’s your favorite kind of design and why?
We find pleasure in exploring unfamiliar design styles, materials, and integrating various professional domains into commercial spaces. This enables us to encounter new challenges and perspectives.
6To you, what makes a “good” design?
Design that stands the test of time in terms of functionality, aesthetics, and user experience, and even achieves environmental friendliness through material choices, is what we consider to be good design.
7Describe your design style and its main characteristics.
When clients specify a particular style they like, we strive to move beyond stereotypes by manipulating design styles. We achieve this by using color combinations and altering design details to create designs that are not only fitting but also richer and more vibrant.
8Tell us about your design process.
After listening to the client's needs and understanding their budget, we propose space planning solutions. We refine each proposal to better align with their requirements, ensuring there are no communication or construction issues before starting the project.
9Congratulations! As the winner of the NY Architectural Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?
Thank you! We are grateful for the acknowledgment and validation from the New York Architectural Design Awards. It reinforces our team's design standards and boosts our confidence in our work. Winning awards adds credibility to our projects when showcasing them to prospective clients in the future.
10Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the NY Architectural Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?
The design of our small-scale commercial office space extends from our clients' corporate logo, which symbolizes a cloud. Sky blue is the predominant color theme while it can highlight the corporate logo. The company's core mission is to improve people's health through its products. We transformed this concept into the space, using diagonal blue angular shapes resembling a medical protective shell that envelops everyone. This competition holds significant benchmark and reference value. We hope participating will showcase our company's work to a wider international audience and potential clients.
11What was the biggest challenge with this project?
The biggest challenge of this project lies in the client's budget and time constraints. As a startup company with limited financial resources, we achieved maximum visual appeal through minimalist design. Additionally, with daily office rental and operating expenses, every day counts financially. Therefore, we compressed the design and construction timelines to complete the project as quickly as possible.
12How has winning an award developed your practice/career?
Winning an award has significantly advanced us by validating the quality of our work and enhancing our professional reputation. It has opened doors to new opportunities, expanded our network within the industry, and increased visibility for our design practice. Additionally, it has boosted client confidence in our abilities and encouraged further innovation and excellence in designs.
13What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?

1) Architecture and interior design are industries that require highly integrated capabilities, demanding strong problem-solving skills due to their complexity. Therefore, whenever we complete a project and see the satisfied smiles on our clients' faces, it brings us a great sense of accomplishment.

2) Enjoying beautiful things and engaging with new technologies, using an artistic perspective to create a better life for clients.

3) It's incredibly fulfilling to witness the joy of seeing our drawings brought to life as tangible creations.

14Where do you see the evolution of design industry going over the next 5-10 years?
Within the next 5 to 10 years, we anticipate a rise in automation in production, driven by technological advancements that will reduce time and costs in drafting. Innovations in materials will further enhance construction efficiency, underscoring a heightened emphasis on developing and adopting green building materials.
15If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring NY Architectural Design Awards submitter, what advice would you give them?
We must cultivate strong resilience to confront future challenges in the field, stay curious to consistently innovate in design thinking, and possess the ability to bring those innovations to fruition.
16What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the design industry?
Engaging in extensive reading of design books and experiencing diverse spaces with distinctive design characteristics are crucial for gaining insights into building materials and construction techniques. This understanding enables us to effectively implement innovative and feasible designs.
