HSIEH TE-LI

As a high school student, HSIEH TE-LI presents a project from his second year of study. He is captivated by intricate and grand designs that inspire awe and finds comfort in their calming, numbing effect.

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your background.
Being a high school student, the project I am presenting is from my second year of study.
2What made you become/why did you choose to become a product designer?
While attending one of my country's top art high schools, I had the remarkable chance to expand my artistic perspectives. The support of passionate teachers and the outstanding educational setting significantly enhanced my artistic development.
3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.
My alma mater has nurtured the development of many prominent figures in the community. At this institution, students can develop a wide range of skills, including watercolor painting, drawing, modeling, software proficiency, color coordination, and spatial planning.
4What does “design” mean to you?
To me, design embodies a fervent passion, a source of joy, a fountain of inspiration, and a profound sense of accomplishment.
5What’s your favorite kind of design and why?
I am captivated by intricate and grand designs that inspire awe, finding comfort in their calming, numbing effect.
6To you, what makes a “good” design?
A great design not only meets the client's needs but also showcases exceptional craftsmanship. It should be created with passion and unwavering commitment.
7Describe your design style and its main characteristics.
In my design work, I frequently use natural, flowing lines and prefer simple, understated colors to express my artistic vision.
8Tell us about your design process.

The design process demands significant time and effort, particularly during the conceptualization phase. However, once I've expressed my ideas, the design seems to naturally fall into place, leaving only the details to be refined.

Interestingly, the actual design structure can be completed in just a few minutes from the initial concept to the final product.

9Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?
The knowledge and skills I acquired from my education greatly impact how I develop design ideas, shape my thinking, and contribute to my personal growth.
10Congratulations! As the winner of the 2024 NY Product Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?
As a student, receiving recognition has the most profound and significant impact on me, motivating and inspiring me to continue striving for excellence.
11Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2024 NY Product Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?
In my sophomore year of high school, I had to complete an assignment, and I chose this specific topic because I felt it was the most deserving project I could undertake.
12What was the biggest challenge with this project?
The biggest challenge in this project is the extensive sanding process. It demands a great deal of time and meticulous attention, as each layer needs to be sanded multiple times to achieve a glossy, polished finish.
13How has winning an award developed your practice/career?
Winning the award has been an immense source of inspiration for me, motivating me to dive deeper into my studies and expand my knowledge of design.
14What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?
The process includes conceptualizing the design, collecting feedback, and reaching the point of completion.
15What makes your country specifically, unique in the design industry?
My country's unique standing in the design industry stems from its cultural diversity, technological expertise, government backing, strong education system, sustainability efforts, advanced manufacturing capabilities, global recognition, and active design communities. These factors combine to create a dynamic and innovative design landscape.
16Where do you see the evolution of design industry going over the next 5-10 years?
Over the next decade, the design industry in my country is anticipated to emphasize sustainability, technological integration, cultural enrichment, global collaboration, enhanced education, user-centric approaches, digital innovation, health-focused design, and sector expansion. These trends will enable Taiwan to maintain its leading position in the global design landscape.
17If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring NY Product Design Awards submitter, what advice would you give them?
Maintaining purity is essential; no matter how complex the design, preserving its purity is crucial.
18What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the design industry?
Delve into the timeless works of design masters, immerse yourself in a wide variety of movies and novels, and cultivate your curiosity. Design touches every aspect of your life.
19Tell us something you have never told anyone else.
When I'm passionate about something, I become deeply focused, and I believe this intense concentration is what makes my artwork genuinely unique and one-of-a-kind.
20Who has inspired you in your life and why?
Life has given me everything I need, and I frequently discover valuable insights in the small details.
21What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?
I have a strong conviction in my work and consistently uphold a humble, motivated, and inspired perspective on life.
22Do you have anything else you would like to add to the interview?
I want to express my gratitude to the award platform for providing me with the opportunity to win the award and for expanding my international perspective. Additionally, I would like to thank the organizer for their recognition.
