Interview With The 2023 New York Photography Awards Winner – Helena Stjernberg

1Can you introduce yourself and talk about how you got into photography?

My name is Helena Stjernberg and live in South Sweden. I starten to photograph when I got my first baby girl. She is som to be 26. Now I photograph where ever I go. Love to photograph and at the same time-give back to all amazing people that is in front of the camera.

2Where did you study photography?

By my own!

3Do you remember your first shot? What was it?

It was my daughter.

4What equipment do you use?

Sony A7RV.

5What do you hope to achieve?

Meet people and document the differents in the world. Find the story behind and the soul.

6What inspires your unique storytelling?

The person that have overcome challenges.

7What THREE (3) words describe your photography style?

Feelings, story and passion.

8Congratulations! As the winner of the New York Photography Awards, what does it mean for you and your team to receive this distinction?

Everything! It is truly an honor.

9Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2023 New York Photography Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

There is a LOT of pictures of Brooklyn Bridge all over the world. But to catch this with the workers was just awesome. It makes the photo appear more than just a bridge. A feeling.

10How has winning an award developed your career?

I just got the message, haha! But I look forward to what opportunities will come my way!

Too many!

12What was the best piece of advice you were given starting out, by a mentor or your role model?

I trust my own vision and feelings. I learn more and more for every picture I take.

13What advice would you give someone who would like to become a photographer today?

Trust yourself and walk your own way.

14What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

Do it for fun!!!
