Interview with the 2021 MUSE Creative Awards Winner - Haolai Francis Zhou

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your creative background.

Hi there, my name is Haolai Francis Zhou originally from China. Currently, I'm living in San Francisco, and working with multiple clients around the world, especially in the US, Australia, and China. I have achieved some international design awards in visual Identity such as IDA, A' Design Award, American Graphic Design Award, Paris Design Award, etc. To be an award-winning designer specializing in branding, digital marketing, and website design, I personally worked in a very diligent manner, and proved to be a critiqued person.

Also, I'm passionate about design, sketching, observation, and solving problems. With 12 years of visual design experience, exploring and exporting a good design and solution, it has created my personal value in modern society. However, drawing and sketching is my inner spirit to review this beautiful and amazing world.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a creative?

I love drawing when I was a child in primary school, and I love to observe people and their eyes to try to understand what are they thinking about. It shows how I'm learning and accessing information from the single component in this world. This is just like how a line or a letter could be the main visual language to telling a brand story and vision. Keep exploring, keep drawing, keep thinking. That's the reason that makes me a creative person.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

I'm the Art Director at Objectify Studios. We are giving solutions to branding, products, and marketing services. I'm in charge of all art direction and design for brand identity, marketing strategy, digital marketing, etc. Also, I'm a sketch drawing artist in my personal life.

4What does “creativity” mean to you?

A process to learn, to feel, and to love this world. It's also a place where I can contribute all my thinking and energy to achieve personal value.

5To you, what makes a “creative” idea and/or design?

Observation means a lot in my creative process. People not only use their eyes to observe this world but also feeling the world by love. These are all about how you observe the people, the facts, and the new virtual world.

6Tell us about your creative and/or design process.

I would like to draw and sketch any ideas and brainstorm. It gives me the first look at my design thinking.

7Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your creativity process?

Yes, the traditional Chinese culture definitely inspired me a lot on how are thinking about creativity and the meaning of "Balance".

8Congratulations! As the winner of the 2021 MUSE Creative Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?

It's an important process to summarize and evaluate my design projects annually. Also, it's great to learn and see how is the design trend going, and how excellent designs presented in the World this year. Critiquing is a significant process for me and the company to find new challenges and opportunities. Definitely, the Awards and competitions give the opportunity to promote personal design and creative thinking to the world. It brings more value to both sides from personal to company.

9Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2021 MUSE Creative Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

The winning project—"Pupstar Brand Identity" is more focused on the relationship between positioning and animals (pets). I love the projects and designs are working with human reality and relationships. It makes the design not only belongs to the visual solution, but it makes the way we care about the world.

10What was the biggest challenge with this project?

The challenging part of this brand is that we don't want our customer to only know this is a tech-product, but to realize how it can contribute to their love and lives.

11Where do you see the evolution of creative industry going over the next 5-10 years?

Human interaction will still be a core field in the creative industry. There are more opportunities to explore and try in different formats. The internet and digital media have brought us a lot of art styles, but I would love to see the next generation of creativity when people get tired to see current art forms. Therefore, this whole process, back and forth from new to past, we can call it human interaction.

12If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring MUSE Creative Awards submitter, what advice would you give them?

I would like to suggest they check out those winner projects first. To see and learn from the excellent design work is always valuable for personal improvement.

13What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

I would say the key is never stop thinking, and keep moving forward. You will always find a better solution when you keep sketching your visual ideas."

14Do you have anything else you would like to add to the interview?

I would like to say thank you for this amazing opportunity to present my work and myself to the creative community.
