Interview with the 2021 MUSE Design Awards Winner - Haochen Su

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

My name is Su HaoChen, a young designer in China. I like to draw things I like when I was young. I have a unique love for painting and like nature. When I was a student, I began to learn painting and explore the subtle relationship between environmental space and people. As an aesthetic communicator, I hope to give life to space and give life to art.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?

It was destined to be in the dark. Like design, interested in beautiful things and their own unique views.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

Works covering architecture, high-end private houses, offices, clubs, etc.

4What does “design” mean to you?

For me, design means a combination of love, passion, life, personality and aesthetics.

5What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

I like the design of modern simplicity most, because nature, true self and simplicity are our initial state.

6To you, what makes a “good” design?

Good design must be integrated and symbiotic.

7Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

Modern personalized symbols, and in the design process, the integration of a lot of new technology elements and technologies, enhance the aesthetic and quality of life of the owners.

8Tell us about your design process.

At the beginning of the design, I will find some intention maps of natural elements, make the orientation of the design, and then gradually refine the design elements to each space.

9Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?

China is an ancient civilization with thousands of years of history, and has a lot of cultural heritage, which I have been influenced by since childhood. Deeply baptized, it has a direct impact on my character and design techniques. Tolerance, symbiosis, integration and nature.

10Congratulations! As the winner of the 2021 MUSE Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?

It's a great encouragement and honor for me and my company. It encourages us to keep our true self in every design project and satisfy the owners and their families as much as possible. The whole design will make the owners and their families more loving and cohesive.

11Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2021 MUSE Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

I have a large flat floor in this work. The owner is a young man of the same age as me. There are many common topics and ideas. In this design, I extracted the Oriental natural elements such as mountain folding and bamboo knots, and also used the original ecological materials in the selection of materials. It makes the space modern, scientific and Oriental, and has some Zen atmosphere.

12What was the biggest challenge with this project?

The biggest challenge is to narrate the design concept with the owner, and implement the design concept and design effect, using some new materials and technologies.

13How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?

The award is a recognition and encouragement for my career. As a practitioner in the design industry, I always uphold the aesthetic idea. I will work harder.

14What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?

There can be painting and hand drawing. You can visit good architectural interior design all over the world and give the owners a sense of achievement after landing.

15What makes your country specifically, unique in the design industry?

With the rapid development of China's economy, the design industry is also on the rise. More and more good cases provide us with a very large customer base. More opportunities to learn good design.

16Where do you see the evolution of design industry going over the next 5-10 years?

Must be more and more intelligent, more and more pursuit of aesthetic space environment. More new materials and technologies will be used.

17If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring MUSE Design Awards submitter, what advice would you give them?

Not only school knowledge but also life knowledge. Because life is the source of the design concept. Everyone should enrich knowledge and apply it to design.

18What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

Work hard, be humble and keep your personality.
