Interview with the 2022 MUSE Design Awards Winner – Gao Long

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

I am Gao Long, a designer from Shanghai, China.

I grew up with a passion for art and received four years of art education at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, China, and this period of studying art had a profound impact on me and my desire to become an artist. After graduation, I joined a local theatre company to work as a stage designer, which was my first job as a choreographer. I designed sets, props, and decorations there. Four years later I went to Shanghai, the largest commercial centre in China, to study stage art and design at the Shanghai Theatre Academy.

Next, I worked at the School of Art and Design of the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, where I taught interior space design and product design and practiced some of my own artistic and design ideas, and thus achieved some very good reactions. After twelve years of service, I decided to leave the school and focus on my own interior design company of furnishing and upholstery business until now.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?

Specifically, I cover a wide range of subjects, and my experience helps me grow. I have good control over space, form, and colour. My experience as a stage designer has further helped and improved my ability to use colour, lighting, and scene setting, which has always influenced my design and decoration.

I deeply care about the life of ordinary people, hoping to improve their quality of life through design, creating warm, unique, and attractive space for our customers, and creating dream homes.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

I founded Yicai Design Company, which specializes in interior space design and soft decoration design, and product support services, such as model houses, sales offices, clubhouses, and private high-end residential customization services for real estate developers. We do not only provide high standard and low-cost designs for common customers, but also provide personalized customization services for high-end customers, and it is our ideal to create elegant, comfortable, and quality living space.

Through years of hard work and insistence on high-quality design, we have achieved excellent results. Our design projects have won many domestic and international design awards and are well-received by our clients.

4What does “design” mean to you?

I am passionate about design and art, and design has become a part of my life.

5What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

The essence of design should be problem-solving, and I believe we should design for the needs of our clients, rather than follow trends and fads. I like to create spaces that reflect our client's personalities, start from the essence of life, restore design to life, and use it to guide our clients to match their lifestyles and life concepts. Let the home truly become the space of one's dreams, rather than satisfy the fantasy of the designer.

6To you, what makes a “good” design?

Because we believe that every project is unique, a good design should be put in the customer's shoes and contribute to the overall customer experience. It serves its purpose and enhances the experience. Always provide incredible solutions to problems in the process.

7Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

I do not have a fixed design style, instead, I try to avoid personal style, and never keep a certain style. I always try to explore new methods and solutions according to the needs of customers. Customers choose us because we offer superior solutions across any style, not just certain design styles.

We use our knowledge and cooperation with our customers, to put their dreams into reality. I like to incorporate artistic elements in design and I'm good at all types of design styles. My ability is due to the first-rate art education I have received since childhood.

8Tell us about your design process.

From stage design, in-depth understanding of that scene is set by the demand of the plot, the main body of space is a person, so I'm in the design of the first is to understand customers and end users of the space, to understand their lifestyle and how they will interact with the region.

Then, I worked with the client to define the environment and atmosphere of the space and refined and implemented these concepts to ensure that the final finished space was what they expected.

9Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?

Absolutely, in my country they have created a lot of glories, it has a great influence on future generations, and this cultural heritage is permeated in the blood.

12What was the biggest challenge with this project?

In the design process, we often face seemingly impossible challenges, but I always try to find a way to meet the needs of customers well, and can stick to my ideas and find a good balance between the two. The biggest challenge for me is a customer's budget for interior decoration items is often much less than we want.

Getting an award is for the great recognition of what we do, we are from the sense of achievement and satisfaction, for me, nothing is more important than the agreed, it will inspire us to always maintain a high level.

China is a country with a long cultural heritage, and Shanghai is a more international metropolis, a city where East meets West, it is constantly developing and changing, and it is always progressing, so it has unlimited possibilities.

16Where do you see the evolution of design industry going over the next 5-10 years?

The information age is changing rapidly, and diversified information permeates every aspect of life in different ways and media. We see the development of technology and all it brings, great changes have taken place in the design, and virtual reality will completely change the way we show to the customer design space and the choice of the way the AI, the universe such as the development of science and technology will become the mainstream of the future, will also produce a great driving force, it is bound to change people's way of life.

17If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring MUSE Design Awards submitter, what advice would you give them?

Think outside the box, stay passionate, stay curious, stay sharp and learn from the world around you. There's a lot to learn about interior design, keep learning so you can keep moving forward.

18What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the design industry?

Sharing my design knowledge with young designers so that they understand the need for historical references to create new contemporary solutions.

19Tell us something you have never told anyone else.

I want to be an artist and be able to do some work exactly as I want, without any constraints.

20Who has inspired you in your life and why?

I like to walk aimlessly. I look at the world from different perspectives. Sometimes a beautiful flower, a beam of sunshine, a piece of art, a performance, relaxing music, or a stage play will give me a lot of inspiration -- all these will evoke a feeling in your heart and bring you back to a wonderful time and space. Maybe the design is not important, but emotion is.

21What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

If passion comes from the love of design, then success comes from relentless persistence. Stick to your ideas, and you will succeed!
