Chunxuan Yu

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your creative background.

I am a seasoned designer with a keen understanding of the delicate balance between aesthetics, functionality, and business value. To me, exemplary design is not just about visual appeal, but about crafting solutions that address real-world problems while creating significant value for users and businesses alike.

Central to my design philosophy is the belief in the confluence of business acumen, insightful design, and in-depth research or strategy. I'm deeply passionate about deciphering human behavior and aspirations, and I employ a human-centric methodology to assist organizations in pinpointing business prospects and architecting transformative products, services, and experiences.

Over the years, I've had the privilege of collaborating with diverse sectors such as Tech, Healthcare, Retail, Manufacturing, and Education. My portfolio boasts collaborations with esteemed entities like Alibaba, Frog, Philips, GE, Lenovo, and GAC Group, among others.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a creative?

My journey into the creative realm began as a natural extension of my inherent curiosity and fascination with the world around me. As I matured, I became cognizant of design's pivotal role in influencing human experiences and bridging societal divides. On the economic front, reports indicate that the design industry contributes to over 4% of the global GDP, with over 29 million jobs directly attributed to design-related roles worldwide. Furthermore, for every $1 invested in design, businesses can expect an average return of $5 in increased revenues and $20 in cost savings.

Beyond these impressive economic figures, design significantly enhances societal well-being. Numerous global initiatives rooted in design principles champion sustainability, advance public health and strengthen community ties. One such endeavor that I'm profoundly connected to is the Net Zero project at GE Appliances. This initiative aims to assist US customers in saving energy, simultaneously combatting the climate change crisis, and reflecting the power of design in providing solutions to global challenges.

Recognizing design's profound economic and societal impact fortified my commitment to be an integral part of this transformative domain.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

I currently serve as a Senior UX Designer at GE Appliances, a renowned name in the industry known for its innovative and quality products. In my role, I am at the forefront of user experience design, ensuring that our appliances offer functionality and an intuitive and user-friendly interface. My responsibilities span from understanding user needs and pain points to crafting design solutions that make our products a pleasure to use.

Additionally, several years ago, I co-founded Inwoo Design in China. This venture was born out of a passion to bring unique design solutions to a broader market. At Inwoo, we prioritize a blend of aesthetics and functionality, catering to a diverse clientele with varying needs. This experience of co-founding and managing a design firm has endowed me with a holistic view of the design process, right from ideation to execution.

In essence, my work revolves around enhancing user experiences, creating innovative design solutions, and continuously pushing the envelope in the ever-evolving world of design.

4What does “creativity” mean to you?
To me, "creativity" is the alchemy of imagination and logic. It's about looking beyond the obvious to envision what could be, while grounding those visions in practical and innovative solutions. In the realm of UX Design, creativity is not just about aesthetic appeal but also about intuitively understanding the user's journey, predicting their needs, and tailoring experiences that feel both novel and familiar.
5To you, what makes a “creative” idea and/or design?
A "creative" idea or design seamlessly marries functionality with innovation. It addresses a genuine need, yet surprises and delights with its unique approach. For me, in the world of UX and design, it's about intuitively understanding the user's journey and crafting solutions that not only solve problems but also evoke emotions and forge memorable experiences.
6Tell us about your creative and/or design process.

My design approach emphasizes collaboration, inclusivity, and leadership. I champion co-creation, involving all stakeholders, especially users, throughout the process to yield comprehensive solutions. By valuing inclusive design, I ensure solutions appeal to a diverse audience, marrying innovation with accessibility.

Underpinning this is my belief in design leadership, where aligning creative direction with strategic goals is key. Together, these principles guide me to produce designs that truly resonate with the target audience.

7What's your favorite part of the creative process and why?

My favorite aspect of the creative process is the phase of co-creation and participatory design. There's something incredibly rewarding about collaborating directly with users and stakeholders, absorbing their insights, and weaving them into the design.

This stage transforms abstract ideas into tangible solutions that resonate deeply with the intended audience. It's not just about creating for them, but creating with them. This collaborative spirit enriches the design and fosters a sense of shared ownership and purpose, ensuring the end product truly serves its users.

8Describe your creative style and its main characteristics.
My creative style revolves around empowerment, collaborative leadership, and inclusivity. I believe in giving designers the autonomy to innovate within a trusting environment. While guiding the overall design vision, I value inputs from the entire team to enrich our creations. Furthermore, I advocate for designs that appeal to a broad spectrum of users, ensuring accessibility for all. In short, my style blends leadership with participative design, emphasizing empowerment at its core.
9Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your creativity process?

Growing up in China has had a profound impact on my creative sensibilities. China's rich history, art, and tradition have instilled in me an appreciation for depth, context, and storytelling in design. The philosophy of balance, harmony, and the interconnectedness of elements has often found its way into my design principles.

Pursuing my Master of Design degree in the United States and working here has added another layer to my creative process. The American emphasis on innovation, individualism, and pushing boundaries has encouraged me to think outside the box and challenge conventional norms.

My design approach is a blend of Chinese depth and American innovation. This intercultural experience allows me to bridge Eastern and Western design philosophies, creating deeply rooted and forward-thinking designs.

It’s a celebration of our collaborative spirit and our unwavering commitment to creating transformative designs.

11Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2023 MUSE Creative Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

We entered "MINA - Your Health Expert" into the 2023 MUSE Creative Awards. MixFit combines our AI-powered app, MINA, with a specialized beverage machine. Using real-time data from users, the system crafts drinks tailored to their immediate nutritional needs.

We chose to submit MINA because it represents a fusion of technology and health in response to the personal wellness trend amplified by the COVID crisis. We believed the MUSE platform was ideal for showcasing this innovative intersection.

12What was the biggest challenge with this project?

The most significant challenge with MINA was ensuring seamless integration between the AI-driven app and the beverage machine. We wanted real-time data analysis and beverage creation to happen almost instantaneously. Balancing the intricate algorithms for personalized nutrition while ensuring the hardware component could execute these recommendations swiftly and accurately required meticulous coordination between our software and hardware teams.

Additionally, ensuring the privacy and security of user health data was paramount. Crafting an experience that was both technologically advanced and user-trusted was a fine line to walk, but it was crucial to the project's success.

13How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?
This honor reinforced my dedication to leading the team towards excellence and novel solutions. The award both acknowledged our successes and set the direction for our future, urging us to consistently innovate and set industry benchmarks.

19Tell us something you have never told anyone else.

While I always seemed sure and confident in my work, there was a time during the early days of the MINA project when I felt overwhelmed. I questioned if we had taken on too much. One night, feeling uncertain, I remembered a saying my grandmother told me: "Every big journey starts with a single step." This thought helped me push forward. Thanks to our team's hard work, MINA turned out to be a success.

I've never spoken about this moment of doubt before. It's my personal reminder that even in tough times, we can find strength and keep going.

20Who has inspired you in your life and why?
My high school art teacher, Miss Zhang, profoundly influenced me. She ignited my passion for creativity, teaching that design goes beyond aesthetics to convey messages and emotions. Emphasizing persistence and continuous growth, she introduced me to diverse design philosophies and encouraged a unique style. Her faith in me and lessons on creativity's depth have been lasting inspirations in my career.
21What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

My key to success lies in three foundational principles: continuous learning, adaptability, and authentic connections. In the ever-evolving realm of design, it's crucial to remain a perpetual student, always open to new techniques, trends, and technologies.

Adaptability has allowed me to embrace change, pivot when necessary, and stay relevant in dynamic landscapes. Above all, forging genuine, authentic connections with both team members and clients has been invaluable. Understanding people, their aspirations, fears, and dreams, makes for a more enriched and human-centric design approach.

My parting words of wisdom would be: "Stay curious and remain grounded. Success is not just about reaching the peak but about the journey, the challenges faced, the lessons learned, and the relationships built along the way. Cherish every step, for it shapes your unique story."

22Do you have anything else you would like to add to the interview?

Absolutely. I'd like to mention a project close to my heart that I've been working on – a book centered around design innovation. Drawing from my experiences, challenges, and insights over the years, this book is a deep dive into the nuances of innovative design, its influence on user experiences, and its potential to drive change in various industries. My intention with this endeavor is not only to share the knowledge I've amassed but also to provide a comprehensive guide for emerging designers.

I truly believe that sharing knowledge uplifts the entire design community. By illuminating the path I've walked, I hope to inspire and empower the next generation of designers to push boundaries, challenge conventions, and craft solutions that can redefine our world. Keep an eye out for it, and I hope it serves as a valuable resource for many!
